Kensico

Kensico Cemetery is a cemetery located in the Hamlet of Valhalla, in the township of Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, New York. It was organized in 1889 under the 'Act authorizing the incorporation of Rural Cemetery Association' passed April 27, 1847. The first interment was made September 1, 1889. The cemetery has expanded to over 460 acres and includes features such as the Community Mausoleum (1924), Sharon Gardens (1953), and the Garden Mausoleum at Montross Pond.

The Kensico Cemetery was organized in 1889 under the 'Act authorizing the incorporation of Rural Cemetery Association' passed April 27th 1847 and the several amendments thereto. The first interment was made September 1, 1889. The cemetery is in the Hamlet of Valhalla in the township of Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, New York. In 1889, at a time when cemeteries in New York City were reaching full capacity, the founders sought to establish a cemetery consistent with the new, rural concept of the time. A large tract of farmland in the hamlet of Valhalla, later expanding to over 460 acres, was selected and developed. The Community Mausoleum was built in 1924 to offer above-ground burials; Sharon Gardens was established in 1953 as a special section dedicated for families of the Jewish faith; monument and memorial park areas were created; Angel's Rest was developed to memorialize the burial of infants; and the Garden Mausoleum at Montross Pond was built as an above-ground, open-air mausoleum.
