Overview
JimJam is an international preschool television channel associated with AMC Networks International. The service began broadcasting in Italy on 1 October 2006 through the Sky platform and was created to provide curated programming for young children and preschool-age audiences. Its programming model was built around recognizable children's properties, scheduled linear television, and localized distribution through cable, satellite, and pay-television operators. The channel's ownership and operating structure changed soon after launch. In September 2007, HIT Entertainment and Chellomedia, Liberty Global's European content division, formed a joint venture to operate JimJam. The partnership supported an international expansion strategy aimed first at Western and Eastern Europe, followed by markets in the Middle East, Asia, and other regions outside the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, and Canada. JimJam expanded into Central and Eastern Europe in November 2007 through UPC Broadband. During 2008 it reached the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Middle East and North Africa through Showtime Arabia, Russia, Bulgaria, Southeast Asia, and Portugal. Israel followed in 2010, while additional country-specific services and distribution arrangements were introduced later. HIT Entertainment withdrew from the joint venture in August 2010. Chello Zone, the Chellomedia unit responsible for the channel, consequently became JimJam's sole owner, while HIT continued to provide content under the post-withdrawal arrangement. By 2010 the channel had been distributed in more than 50 territories across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. By 2013, published descriptions of the service stated that it reached approximately 17 million subscribers in 13 languages, with seven feeds and four localized versions across more than 60 territories. JimJam also developed market-specific adaptations. In Poland, AMC Networks International and the Polsat Group established a joint venture that operated Polsat JimJam. The service initially followed the wider JimJam schedule but added Polish audio, subtitles, advertising, and local-time scheduling. In February 2023, Polsat sold its interest in Polsat JimJam Limited to AMC Networks International. The Polish service continued to use the Polsat JimJam name, with Polsat Media remaining responsible for advertising sales. The channel extended its reach into Africa in 2012 with English- and Portuguese-language distribution, entered Lithuania in the same year, and launched in the Philippines through SkyCable in March 2013. It later received a new visual identity in 2018 featuring a new logo and three mascots named Jim, Jam, and Star. Dedicated Hungarian and Romanian versions followed in 2020. At the same time, the service was withdrawn from several territories: Asia-Pacific in 2014, Italy in 2015, Switzerland and Austria in 2017, Belgium and the Netherlands in 2018, the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2022, and Portugal in 2022. Portuguese-language distribution remained available in Angola and Mozambique through DStv, alongside an English-language service. JimJam therefore represents a long-running international preschool television brand whose footprint has shifted over time from broad multi-region distribution toward selected European, African, and pay-television markets.
History
JimJam launched on 1 October 2006 in Italy, where it was carried by Sky. It was conceived as an international preschool television service rather than a country-specific broadcaster, with an intended expansion path across European cable and satellite systems and later into other regions. Its early operating model relied on partnerships with pay-television distributors and on children's programming supplied by established content owners. A major structural development came in September 2007, when HIT Entertainment and Chellomedia formed a joint venture to operate the channel. Chellomedia was Liberty Global's European content division and later became associated with AMC Networks International. The partnership supported expansion into Central and Eastern Europe, beginning with UPC Broadband in November 2007. In 2008, JimJam added distribution in the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Middle East and North Africa, Russia, Bulgaria, Southeast Asia, and Portugal. Israel was added in 2010, and by that year the service was reported to be available in more than 50 territories. HIT Entertainment withdrew from the joint venture in August 2010. Chello Zone consequently became JimJam's sole owner, although HIT was expected to continue supplying programming. The channel continued to grow through multiple language feeds and local platform relationships. Its geographic footprint included Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. By 2013, JimJam was described as reaching about 17 million subscribers in 13 languages, with seven feeds and four localized versions across more than 60 territories. The brand's Polish operation followed a distinctive path. AMC Networks International and Polsat Group created a joint venture in 2009, and the resulting Polsat JimJam service progressively incorporated Polish scheduling, audio, subtitles, and advertising while retaining the broader JimJam programming identity. In February 2023, Polsat sold its stake to AMC Networks International. The service continued under the Polsat JimJam name, and Polsat Media continued to handle advertising sales. Further launches included Lithuania in August 2012, Africa in English and Portuguese during 2012, and the Philippines through SkyCable in March 2013. JimJam was relaunched as a BeIN exclusive across the Middle East and North Africa in August 2016. A visual rebrand in 2018 introduced a new logo and the mascots Jim, Jam, and Star. Dedicated Hungarian and Romanian versions launched in 2020. The channel subsequently closed in a number of markets. Its Asia-Pacific service ended in December 2014 and its Italian service ended in June 2015. Distribution in Switzerland and Austria ended in December 2017, followed by Belgium and the Netherlands in March 2018. The CIS service closed in March 2022 and Portugal followed in July 2022. Portuguese-language availability continued for Angola and Mozambique through DStv, which also carried an English-language channel. The resulting business is a selectively distributed international preschool brand operating through regional feeds and platform agreements rather than a single uniform worldwide service.
