Jersey cattle are a British breed of small dairy cattle originating on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Jersey cattle were exported in substantial numbers, including to the United States from about 1850. History
Jersey cattle originated on the island of Jersey in the British Channel Islands. Their ancestry is generally associated with cattle brought from the nearby Norman mainland, although the precise formation of the breed is not fully documented. The population was recognized as a separate breed by about 1700. Jersey is one of the Channel Islands’ principal cattle traditions; the other historically recognized breeds were Guernsey and Alderney, with Alderney now extinct.
