Overview
Innobase was a Finnish software company founded in Helsinki in 1995 by Heikki Tuuri to develop InnoDB, a transactional storage engine for relational databases. The company became closely associated with the MySQL ecosystem after beginning a collaboration with MySQL AB in September 2000. That relationship led to InnoDB being incorporated into MySQL in a release issued in March 2001, helping MySQL provide transactional capabilities alongside its broader open-source relational-database offering. InnoDB had initially been developed as closed-source software. After Innobase was unable to find a buyer for the technology, its collaboration with MySQL resulted in the engine being released as open-source software. This transition was strategically important: InnoDB became a major technical component of MySQL and was widely used for applications requiring transaction support, crash recovery, foreign keys, and reliable data persistence. MySQL AB subsequently sought to complete a direct deal with Innobase, but the negotiations did not result in an acquisition by MySQL. Oracle Corporation acquired Innobase in October 2005, making the Finnish developer an Oracle subsidiary. The transaction gave Oracle control of the company behind the storage engine that had become central to MySQL deployments. Oracle later acquired Sun Microsystems in January 2010; Sun had acquired MySQL AB, bringing both the InnoDB developer and the MySQL business into the same broader corporate group through separate transactions. Innobase ultimately ceased to operate as an independent business. It was fully merged into Oracle, and all of its business activities were terminated on July 8, 2013. The company is therefore a historical database-technology brand rather than an active standalone enterprise. Its principal legacy is InnoDB's role in the development and adoption of transactional open-source relational database software and in the evolution of MySQL under Oracle ownership.
History
Innobase was established in Helsinki, Finland, in 1995 by Heikki Tuuri to develop InnoDB, a transactional storage engine intended for relational database systems. The company's identity and commercial significance were closely tied to this technology rather than to a broad portfolio of consumer-facing products. InnoDB was initially closed-source software, reflecting the company's original development and commercialization approach. A decisive change came in September 2000, when Innobase began working with MySQL AB. The collaboration connected InnoDB with the rapidly expanding MySQL open-source database project. InnoDB was incorporated into a MySQL release in March 2001, giving MySQL an important transactional storage option and making Innobase's technology part of a widely used database platform. The relationship also contributed to the open-source release of InnoDB. Innobase had been unable to find a buyer for the technology, and the collaboration with MySQL provided a route for broader distribution and adoption. During the following years, MySQL attempted to negotiate a direct deal with Innobase, but those efforts did not culminate in a MySQL acquisition. Instead, Oracle Corporation acquired Innobase in October 2005. The transaction made Innobase an Oracle subsidiary and placed the company behind InnoDB under the ownership of a large enterprise-software provider. This acquisition was significant because InnoDB had become an important part of the MySQL ecosystem and was used to support transactional database workloads. Oracle's later acquisition of Sun Microsystems in January 2010 further connected Innobase to the MySQL corporate history. Sun Microsystems owned MySQL AB, so Oracle ultimately controlled both the company that developed InnoDB and the MySQL business through different acquisitions. Although the technology continued to matter within the database landscape, Innobase did not remain a separate operating company indefinitely. Innobase was eventually fully merged into Oracle. Its independent business activities ended on July 8, 2013, marking the formal end of the company as a standalone enterprise. The brand's enduring importance comes from InnoDB, which helped MySQL support transactional workloads and contributed to the broader adoption of open-source relational database infrastructure. Innobase is consequently best understood as a historical technology company whose principal product outlasted its corporate independence.

Products and positioning
Innobase was positioned as a specialist database-technology developer focused on transactional storage infrastructure, with InnoDB serving as its defining product and technical legacy.
InnoDBTransactional database storage engine
InnoDB was Innobase's defining technology and a transactional storage engine developed for relational database systems. It was initially closed source, but became open source through Innobase's collaboration with MySQL AB. Integrated into MySQL in 2001, InnoDB gave the database platform capabilities needed for transaction-oriented workloads and became the principal technical legacy of Innobase.
