History
Index Fresh was founded in 1914 in Orange County by California produce growers. Originally producing lemons and oranges under the name Index Orchards, it became a cooperative in 1929 and renamed itself the Index Mutual Association. By 1950, it acquired the United Growers Association and began avocado distribution. Avocados replaced citrus production during the '60s and '70s. The headquarters moved to Bloomington in San Bernardino County, and in 1989 a certified packing and cooling facility was built. In the early '90s, the company expanded to include Chilean avocados and changed its name to Index Fresh of California. In 1999, it converted back to a grower-owned distributor and became Index Fresh, Inc.
