History
Hubbell's origins date to 1888, when inventor and entrepreneur Harvey Hubbell II established a small manufacturing operation in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The business initially produced practical mechanical goods, including a paper-roll holder with a toothed cutting blade for retail wrapping-paper counters. Hubbell's need to manufacture components for his own products led him to develop machinery and production methods, including equipment for tapping and cold-rolled screw threads. These capabilities became an important foundation for the company's later electrical manufacturing. Hubbell turned increasingly toward electrical products during the 1890s. His 1896 pull-chain light socket gave users a convenient way to control a lamp, while his separable plug and receptacle designs addressed the need for safer, more convenient connection to a wall power supply. The company subsequently produced lamp holders, cartridge fuses, fuse blocks, switches, plugs, and receptacles. Its duplex receptacle became one of the most familiar forms of electrical outlet. During the Second World War, Hubbell supplied electrical components for military vehicles, M4 tank battery-charging systems, test instruments, radio communications, and aircraft. A Lexington, Kentucky, plant was opened to increase capacity and reduce dependence on the Bridgeport site. After the war, Hubbell expanded its electrical products into marine, transportation, and harsh-environment applications. The SS United States was fitted with Hubbell wiring devices designed for confined spaces and salt-air exposure. The company also developed corrosion-resistant products for boats and marinas, which later supported applications in industrial environments where moisture or corrosive materials could damage conventional wiring devices. From 1960 onward, Hubbell entered a period of sustained expansion. Internal product development remained important, but acquisitions became a second major growth channel.
