Overview
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (HPE) is a United States-based multinational information-technology company serving businesses, public-sector organizations, telecommunications providers, and other institutional customers. It was created on November 1, 2015, when Hewlett-Packard split into two separately listed companies. HP Inc. retained the former company’s personal-computer and printing operations, while HPE received its enterprise technology, services, software, server, storage, networking, and consulting businesses. HPE trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker HPE, separate from HP Inc.’s historical stock identity. The company’s main activities span enterprise servers, data storage, wired and wireless networking, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence infrastructure, edge computing, container and cloud-management software, consulting, technical support, and customer financing. Its portfolio includes ProLiant servers, HPE Synergy composable infrastructure, HPE Alletra and related storage systems, Aruba Networking, Cray supercomputing technologies, HPE Ezmeral software, and HPE GreenLake. GreenLake is central to HPE’s strategy: it packages infrastructure and selected software and services through a consumption-based model intended to give customers cloud-like purchasing and operating flexibility while allowing workloads to remain in customer facilities, colocation environments, or public-cloud-connected deployments. HPE’s history has been shaped by portfolio restructuring. In 2017, its Enterprise Services business was combined with Computer Sciences Corporation to create DXC Technology, while its non-core software portfolio was merged with Micro Focus. HPE also expanded its infrastructure capabilities through acquisitions including Silicon Graphics International, SimpliVity, Nimble Storage, and Cray. Aruba Networks, acquired by the former Hewlett-Packard before the 2015 separation, became an important part of HPE’s networking business. These transactions moved HPE away from the broad conglomerate inherited from Hewlett-Packard and toward infrastructure platforms, networking, high-performance computing, and recurring services. The company serves organizations across industries and regions through direct sales, channel partners, system integrators, managed-service providers, and technology alliances. Its offerings are used for conventional data-center workloads as well as artificial-intelligence computing, private and hybrid cloud, virtualization, data protection, cybersecurity, edge operations, and advanced scientific research. HPE Financial Services supports equipment acquisition and lifecycle management for customers and partners. HPE has also made sustainability and energy efficiency part of its enterprise positioning, particularly in data-center equipment and high-performance computing, where power consumption and cooling are material operating concerns. The company has reported emissions-reduction targets aligned with a 1.5-degree-Celsius climate pathway. Its public profile has nevertheless included criticism concerning the use of technology supplied by Israeli subsidiaries and institutions, as well as scrutiny of a proposed Juniper Networks acquisition and earlier reports about the examination of security-software source code by a Russian defense organization. HPE relocated its corporate headquarters from California to the Houston area in Texas. The company remains an active, publicly traded enterprise-technology vendor whose strategic emphasis is increasingly on hybrid cloud, networking, AI infrastructure, edge computing, and technology delivered as a service.
History
HPE was established on November 1, 2015, when Hewlett-Packard separated its enterprise technology operations from its personal-computer and printing operations. The new company inherited Hewlett-Packard's enterprise servers, storage, networking, services, financing, and software-related activities, while HP Inc. became the home of the PC and printer businesses. Meg Whitman became HPE's first chief executive, and the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol HPE. The separation was part of a broader effort to give the two businesses more focused strategies and capital structures. HPE initially operated across traditional data-center hardware, technology services, consulting, software, and financing. Its early portfolio included ProLiant servers, 3PAR storage, networking, high-performance computing, and enterprise support. In 2017, HPE completed two major portfolio changes. Its Enterprise Services business combined with Computer Sciences Corporation to form DXC Technology, and much of its software business was transferred to Micro Focus. These transactions reduced HPE's exposure to lower-growth or less-integrated activities and left it more concentrated on infrastructure and related services. HPE continued to expand in specialized infrastructure. It acquired Silicon Graphics International in 2016, adding high-performance computing and data analytics capabilities, and completed the acquisition of supercomputer company Cray in 2019. The Cray business became central to HPE's high-performance computing strategy and supplied systems to national laboratories, universities, research organizations, and commercial customers. HPE also developed its networking business through Aruba, which had been acquired by the predecessor Hewlett-Packard in 2015, and through subsequent product and software integration. Antonio Neri succeeded Meg Whitman as president and chief executive officer in 2018. Under Neri, HPE placed greater strategic emphasis on hybrid cloud, edge computing, networking, and recurring consumption models. HPE GreenLake became the main expression of this direction. Rather than limiting cloud services to infrastructure in a public cloud, GreenLake was designed to provide a unified operating and commercial model across customer data centers, colocation facilities, and public-cloud environments. The platform has broadened from a consumption option for servers and storage into a multi-workload portfolio involving private cloud, data protection, networking, edge, and data and artificial-intelligence services. HPE acquired Silver Peak in 2020 and combined its software-defined wide-area networking capabilities with Aruba's networking portfolio. It also pursued further expansion in cloud-native operations and data management through additional technology investments and partnerships. The company has increasingly presented networking as a strategic complement to compute and cloud infrastructure, particularly as organizations distribute workloads across data centers, public clouds, branch locations, and edge sites. In January 2024, HPE announced an agreement to acquire Juniper Networks. The proposed transaction was intended to create a larger networking business with stronger campus, data-center, wireless, routing, security, and artificial-intelligence networking capabilities. The deal required regulatory review and other closing conditions. HPE has continued to describe its long-term model as a combination of infrastructure products, software, services, partner-led delivery, and recurring consumption through GreenLake. Its present business is centered on enterprise compute, storage, networking, high-performance computing, hybrid cloud, edge systems, and associated support and financial services.
