Overview
HD Hyundai Mipo, formerly known as Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, was a South Korean shipbuilding and marine-engineering company based in Ulsan. It operated within the HD Hyundai group and developed a particularly strong position in mid-sized commercial vessels, including product carriers, containerships, car ferries, roll-on/roll-off vessels, offshore support vessels, and specialized ships. Its business also included ship repair and conversion, activities that formed the company’s original industrial base before newbuilding became its principal business. The company was established in April 1975 on the premises of Hyundai Heavy Industries. It initially built its reputation through repair and conversion work, serving international shipowners and handling vessels of varied types. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded its repair infrastructure and reached successive operational milestones, including the docking of its 2,000th and 3,000th repair vessels and the completion of major conversion projects. By the mid-2000s, the company reported that it had repaired more than 8,000 ships and converted approximately 2,000 vessels. Its repair and conversion experience helped provide the technical foundation for later newbuilding activity. HD Hyundai Mipo opened a new shipyard at its present Ulsan location in 1982 and became a publicly traded company on the KOSPI in December 1983. It later broadened its manufacturing footprint through facilities in Vietnam and South Korea, including the Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard in Vietnam, the Daebul Factory in Jeonnam, and the Jangsaengpo Factory in Ulsan. The Vietnam operation subsequently entered newbuilding activity, extending the group’s capacity in international and mid-sized ship markets. From the 1980s onward, HD Hyundai Mipo delivered vessels for customers in the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway, France, South Korea, and other markets. Its delivered portfolio included a cable layer, reefer vessel, floating production storage and offloading vessel, pipe-laying ship, car ferry, platform supply vessel, and passenger/vehicle ferry. The company reported delivery of its 400th newly ordered vessel in 2009 and its 700th newbuild in 2013. In 2007, it delivered more than one million compensated gross tons in a year, ranking fourth globally by that measure at the time, and it was described as holding approximately half of the global product-carrier segment. Newbuilding became the company’s dominant activity. The cited business mix was approximately 96.4 percent shipbuilding and 3.6 percent conversion and repair. Product carriers, especially medium-range vessels, became a signature line, while sub-Panamax containerships, con-ro carriers, asphalt carriers, ferries, and offshore support vessels added breadth. Several of these products received South Korean World-Class Product recognition. The company also received export awards associated with shipments exceeding two billion and three billion U.S. dollars in 2008 and 2009, respectively; these awards reflect export performance rather than disclosed company revenue figures. HD Hyundai Mipo maintained quality, environmental, and occupational-safety management certifications, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 certifications cited in company history materials. It also obtained a greenhouse-gas inspection certificate in 2010. Its industry profile was reinforced by repeated ship-repair and shipbuilding awards from Lloyd’s List Maritime Asia and management recognition from AsiaMoney. In 2025, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Mipo pursued a merger intended to combine HD Hyundai Mipo’s expertise in mid-sized vessels with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ large-vessel production capabilities. The merger was approved in August 2025 and completed in December 2025, with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries as the surviving company. Accordingly, HD Hyundai Mipo is treated here as a former standalone listed shipbuilding company whose capabilities and opera…
History
HD Hyundai Mipo was founded in April 1975 on the premises of Hyundai Heavy Industries. The company’s early identity was built around ship repair and conversion rather than large-scale newbuilding. It progressively expanded its dockyard activity during the 1980s, receiving repair and conversion work from international operators and handling specialized projects such as LNG-vessel conversions. A new shipyard at its present location was completed in December 1982, providing the infrastructure for a larger and more diversified operating base. The company was listed on the KOSPI in December 1983. During the following decade, it established a record of successive repair and conversion milestones, including the docking of its 2,000th repair vessel in 1984, its 3,000th in 1987, delivery of its 2,000th conversion project in 1995, and repair of its 6,000th vessel in the same year. By 2005, it had repaired more than 8,000 ships. This accumulated technical experience became an important foundation for its transition toward commercial shipbuilding. HD Hyundai Mipo expanded internationally and geographically during the late 1990s and 2000s. The Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard in Vietnam was completed in 1999, while the Daebul Factory in Jeonnam and the Jangsaengpo Factory in Ulsan were completed in 2005. The Vietnam operation later entered newbuilding, broadening the company’s regional production network. The business also developed recognized expertise in medium-range product carriers, sub-Panamax containerships, con-ro carriers, asphalt carriers, ferries, and offshore support vessels. Its newbuilding history included a cable layer delivered for the United Kingdom in 1983, a reefer vessel for the United States in 1986, an FPSO for Norway in 1997, a pipe-laying vessel for France in 2001, a Korean car ferry in 2002, and a platform supply vessel for BP in 2014. The company delivered its 400th newly ordered vessel in 2009 and its 700th newbuild in 2013. In 2007, its annual output exceeded one million compensated gross tons, placing it among the world’s leading shipbuilders by that measure. The company was especially prominent in product carriers and was described as having about half of the global share in that segment. During the 2000s and 2010s, HD Hyundai Mipo received recognition for product quality, export performance, management, and shipyard operations. Its MR product carrier and sub-Panamax containership were selected as South Korean World-Class Products, followed later by a con-ro carrier and an asphalt carrier. Lloyd’s List Maritime Asia recognized the company repeatedly for ship repair and shipbuilding. The company also received export prizes associated with exports exceeding two billion dollars in 2008 and three billion dollars in 2009. Quality and sustainability-related milestones included ISO 9001 certification, ISO 14001 environmental certification, OHSAS 18001 occupational-health-and-safety certification, and a greenhouse-gas inspection certificate. By the time of the 2025 restructuring, shipbuilding represented the overwhelming majority of the company’s cited business mix, at approximately 96.4 percent, while conversion and repair represented about 3.6 percent. In August 2025, the merger with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries was approved. The transaction was completed in December 2025, with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries as the surviving company. The merger was intended to unite HD Hyundai Mipo’s strength in mid-sized vessels with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ large-ship production capabilities. HD Hyundai Mipo therefore ceased to operate as a separate listed corporate entity, although its facilities, expertise, and shipbuilding capabilities became part of the unified HD Hyundai Heavy Industries organization.

Products and positioning
A specialized South Korean shipbuilder focused on mid-sized commercial and specialized vessels, with a historical competitive advantage in product carriers and an established ship-repair and conversion capability.
Product carriersCommercial vessels
Product carriers were HD Hyundai Mipo’s signature newbuilding line. The company was particularly associated with medium-range product carriers used to transport refined petroleum products and related liquid cargoes. Its MR product carrier was selected as a South Korean World-Class Product in 2003. The company’s strong position in this segment was a major part of its international shipbuilding identity.
Sub-Panamax containershipsCommercial vessels
HD Hyundai Mipo built sub-Panamax containerships for containerized cargo routes that did not require the largest ocean-going vessels. The type was recognized as a South Korean World-Class Product in 2006 and formed part of the company’s broader specialization in practical, mid-sized commercial tonnage.
Con-ro carriersRo-ro and cargo vessels
Con-ro carriers combine roll-on/roll-off vehicle or wheeled-cargo handling with containerized cargo capacity. HD Hyundai Mipo’s con-ro carrier was selected as a South Korean World-Class Product in 2012, reflecting the company’s participation in specialized cargo-vessel markets.
Asphalt carriersSpecialized tankers
Asphalt carriers are specialized tankers designed to transport heated asphalt and bituminous materials. HD Hyundai Mipo’s asphalt carrier was selected as a South Korean World-Class Product in 2013, adding a specialized tanker category to the company’s better-known product-carrier portfolio.
FerriesPassenger and vehicle vessels
The company built both car ferries and passenger/vehicle ferries. Notable deliveries included the Korean car ferry Seonghee in 2002 and an order announced in 2020 for MV Manxman, a passenger and vehicle ferry for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.
Ship repair and conversionMarine services
Ship repair and conversion were the company’s original core activities. Its work included repairs, major conversions, and LNG-related conversion projects. The company reported more than 8,000 repaired vessels by 2005 and approximately 2,000 completed conversion projects by 1995. Although newbuilding later dominated the business mix, repair and conversion remained an important part of its historical expertise.
