Harmony of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, a cruise brand within Royal Caribbean Group. Built by STX France at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, the ship was conceived as the third vessel in Royal Caribbean's Oasis class after the commercial success of Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. Its name refers to the Harmony module of the International Space Station, linking the ship's identity to a theme of connection and large-scale engineered design. The ship was floated out in June 2015, conducted sea trials in March 2016, and was delivered to Royal Caribbean on 12 May 2016 after approximately 32 months of construction. It left Saint-Nazaire on 15 May 2016 and initially operated from Southampton and Barcelona. After preview cruises to Cherbourg and Rotterdam, its maiden voyage departed Southampton on 29 May 2016 and reached Barcelona on 5 June. During its inaugural season, the ship offered seven-night Western Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona and Civitavecchia. It was formally christened in Miami in November 2016, with Miami-Dade County teacher Brittany Affolter serving as godmother. Harmony of the Seas was designed around the Oasis-class concept of dividing a very large vessel into distinct neighborhoods. Central Park and the Boardwalk provide contrasting environments, while accommodation, dining, entertainment, retail, sports, and water attractions are distributed across the ship. The vessel has 2,747 staterooms and can accommodate 5,479 guests at double occupancy. Its facilities include approximately 20 dining venues, a 1,400-seat theater, three swimming pools, two surf simulators, water slides, the Ultimate Abyss dry slide, and a substantial art collection. The ship was also notable for introducing water slides to Royal Caribbean's Oasis class. Its engineering incorporates several efficiency measures intended to reduce fuel consumption and operating noise. These include an air-bubble drag-reduction system, a smooth hull surface, LED and fluorescent lighting, waste-heat recovery, and three Azipod propulsion units. Royal Caribbean has described the ship as more energy efficient than the first two Oasis-class vessels, with the bubble system contributing to lower drag and fuel use. Harmony of the Seas emerged from Royal Caribbean's expansion of the Oasis class, a ship design intended to make an exceptionally large cruise vessel feel like a collection of themed districts rather than a single undifferentiated hotel. Following the success of Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, Royal Caribbean Cruises placed an order for a third Oasis-class vessel with STX France in December 2012. The ship's operating history has also included serious accidents and operational disruptions. In September 2016, a lifeboat detached during a drill, killing one employee and injuring four. In December 2018, crew member Arron Hough disappeared and was later presumed to have gone overboard. In January 2019, passenger Laurent Mercer died after a balcony-related fall in Labadee. In 2022, the vessel's entry into a temporary Cape Canaveral exclusion zone delayed a SpaceX launch, and it later collided with a jetty in Falmouth, Jamaica, without reported injuries. A passenger death after a balcony fall was reported in September 2024, while severe weather near Hurricane Milton produced substantial ship movement in October of that year. A six-week amplification reported for April 2026 was intended to refresh the ship with additional dining, bar, casino, suite, and family facilities.
