Overview
Hana Financial Group is a Seoul-based South Korean financial holding company organized around Hana Bank and a broad network of financial subsidiaries. Its activities cover commercial and retail banking, securities, credit cards, consumer finance, insurance, asset management, trust services, venture investment, information technology, and investor services. The group serves individuals, small businesses, corporations, institutional investors, and public-sector clients. The group was created in 2005 as Hana Bank was reorganized into a financial holding structure. As part of that transition, Hana Bank was delisted and became a subsidiary of the new holding company. In the same year, the group expanded beyond banking by acquiring Daehan Investment and Securities, then one of South Korea's largest asset-management businesses. This transaction established a broader platform for investment and wealth-management services. A major turning point came in 2012, when Hana Financial Group acquired a 51.02 percent interest in Korea Exchange Bank from Lone Star Funds for KRW 2.02 trillion. Korea Exchange Bank, commonly known as KEB, strengthened the group's corporate banking, foreign-exchange, trade-finance, and international capabilities. Labor opposition delayed the integration of KEB and Hana Bank; the two institutions continued to operate separately under the group until their merger was completed in 2015. A subsequent Lone Star arbitration claim seeking additional compensation was dismissed in May 2019. Hana's operating footprint extends well beyond South Korea. Its subsidiaries and affiliates have operated across Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, with notable banking and equity-investment activities in China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The group established Hana Bank China in 2007, obtained expanded renminbi and debit-card transaction permissions in 2009, and acquired an 18.44 percent interest in Bank of Jilin in 2010. It also entered a strategic alliance with China Merchants Bank in 2011. In Indonesia, the group acquired Bank Bintang Manunggal in 2007, renamed it PT Bank Hana in 2008, and later combined its Indonesian operations with Bank KEB Indonesia following the wider KEB transaction. In 2021, it launched LINE Bank by Hana Bank through a partnership involving LINE Financial Asia. In Vietnam, KEB Hana Bank acquired a 15 percent stake in BIDV in 2019. The group's principal Korean businesses include Hana Bank, Hana Securities, KEB Hana Card, Hana Capital, Hana Life, Hana Insurance, Hana Savings Bank, Hana Asset Trust, Hana Alternative Asset Management, Hana F&I, Hana Ventures, Hana Investor Services, Hana TI, and Hana Financial Find. International units include Hana Bank China, PT Bank Hana in Indonesia, Hana Asia in Hong Kong, and BNB Hana Bank in the New York and New Jersey area. Hana Financial Group should not be confused with the separate Los Angeles-based Hana Financial, Inc., a non-bank lender and factoring company that is not a member of this group. Hana Financial Group is generally positioned as a comprehensive financial platform combining a major domestic bank with capital-markets, insurance, consumer-finance, and overseas businesses. Public descriptions emphasize service to both retail and corporate customers, international connectivity, and diversification across financial sectors. In 2025, the group was reported as one of South Korea's four largest financial holding companies and recorded approximately KRW 4.0 trillion in net profit, representing a reported 7.1 percent increase for that year.
History
Hana Financial Group was established in 2005 through the conversion of Hana Bank into a financial holding-company structure. Hana Bank was delisted and placed under the new holding company as a subsidiary. The group's first major diversification move came in the same year, when it acquired Daehan Investment and Securities, a leading South Korean asset-management and securities business. The transaction broadened Hana's activities beyond deposit-taking and lending. The group's most consequential expansion was its 2012 acquisition of a 51.02 percent stake in Korea Exchange Bank from Lone Star Funds for KRW 2.02 trillion. KEB added scale and expertise in corporate banking, foreign exchange, trade finance, and international markets. Integration was politically and operationally difficult. The KEB labor union opposed the merger with Hana Bank, and the two banks consequently continued to operate independently within the Hana Financial Group umbrella for several years. The merger was eventually completed in 2015, creating the institution now known as KEB Hana Bank. Lone Star later pursued an arbitration claim for additional compensation related to the transaction; the claim was dismissed in May 2019. International expansion developed in parallel. Hana Financial Group established Hana Bank China in 2007, and the Chinese subsidiary received authorization in 2009 for renminbi-related transactions and debit-card transactions. In 2010, the group acquired an 18.44 percent stake in Bank of Jilin. A strategic alliance with China Merchants Bank followed in 2011. In Indonesia, the group acquired Bank Bintang Manunggal in 2007 and renamed it PT Bank Hana the following year. The Indonesian business later acquired Bank KEB Indonesia in connection with the broader KEB expansion. In 2021, Hana introduced LINE Bank by Hana Bank through a partnership with LINE Financial Asia. The group's Vietnam presence was strengthened in 2019 when KEB Hana Bank acquired 15 percent of BIDV. Over time, Hana Financial Group developed a multi-business portfolio. Hana Bank remains the central operating subsidiary, while Hana Securities provides securities and capital-markets services. Other affiliates cover cards, consumer finance, life and general insurance, savings banking, asset trusts, alternative assets, venture investment, financial information technology, investor services, and financial research or support functions. The group also maintains overseas units in China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the United States, and other regions. The group is one of South Korea's major financial holding companies. Its structure allows it to combine banking relationships with investment, insurance, payments, asset-management, and international services. Publicly available descriptions identify operations or subsidiaries across 24 countries spanning Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. In 2025, Hana was reported to have generated approximately KRW 4.0 trillion in net profit, up 7.1 percent, as part of the combined earnings reported by South Korea's four largest financial holding companies.
