Hamilton Russell

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of the most southerly wine estates in Africa, pioneering viticulture in the cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation. The estate specializes in terroir-driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, widely regarded as the best in South Africa. Founded by Tim Hamilton Russell in 1975, the estate was later taken over by his son Anthony Hamilton Russell, who narrowed the range to these two varieties.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards was founded in 1975 when Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site to make cool climate wines. His son, Anthony Hamilton Russell, took over in 1991 and finally bought the business in 1994. He narrowed the range to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Extensive soil research initiated in 1994 identified 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil as optimal.
