Overview
Grange Insurance, commonly identified corporately as Grange Mutual Holding Company, is an American mutual insurance organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Its principal business is property-and-casualty insurance, with products centered on automobile, homeowners and other property, and business coverage. The company distributes its policies through a network of more than 4,000 independent agents and operates across 13 U.S. states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The organization traces its roots to insurance arrangements serving members of the Ohio State Grange. Before Grange Mutual itself was established, Town and Village Insurance Company Services worked under an agreement with Grange Insurance Services, Inc. to write automobile insurance for Ohio State Grange members. The arrangement used a special automobile policy supplied by New Century Casualty Company of Chicago, while Grange Insurance Services handled general-agent, sales, and promotional activities in Ohio. On March 25, 1935, Grange Mutual Casualty Company was formed as a nonprofit corporation under Ohio law and assumed the existing book of business. It began as an assessment-based mutual insurer whose sales were limited to Ohio State Grange members. Over time, the company broadened its product range. A hospitalization policy was introduced in 1942, general liability coverage followed in 1944, and fire and extended coverage became available in 1955. These additions changed Grange from a narrowly focused automobile insurer into a multiline insurance company. A significant structural and commercial change occurred in 1958, when Grange Mutual became independent of the Ohio State Grange and opened its products to the general public within Ohio. The organization later expanded beyond its home state. In 2002, it entered an affiliation with Integrity Insurance, enabling Grange to serve customers in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. The broader group subsequently operated through several insurance companies, including Grange Insurance Company, Grange Property & Casualty Insurance Company, Trustgard Insurance Company, Grange Indemnity Insurance Company, Grange Insurance Company of Michigan, Integrity Insurance Company, Integrity Select Insurance Company, and Integrity Property & Casualty Company. Grange also had a life-insurance operation, but that business was separated from the brand's continuing insurance offering. On October 1, 2018, Grange Life Insurance Company was acquired by Kansas City Life Insurance Company. Following that transaction, Grange Insurance stopped offering life-insurance policies and remained focused on property-and-casualty lines. In 2019, Grange Mutual Casualty Company reorganized its corporate structure as a mutual holding company. The reorganization placed the operating insurance entities within the Grange Mutual Holding Company framework while preserving the mutual-insurance orientation associated with policyholder ownership. In its present form, Grange is best understood as a regional U.S. insurance group rather than a nationwide or international financial-services conglomerate. Its identity rests on mutual ownership, independent-agent distribution, and a portfolio serving households, drivers, property owners, and businesses.
History
Grange Insurance developed from an insurance program created for members of the Ohio State Grange. In February 1933, Town and Village Insurance Company Services operated under an agreement with Grange Insurance Services, Inc. to write automobile insurance for Ohio State Grange members. The policy was supplied by New Century Casualty Company of Chicago, while Grange Insurance Services acted as the general agent in Ohio and managed sales and promotional activity. On March 25, 1935, Grange Mutual Casualty Company was incorporated as a nonprofit corporation under the General Code of Ohio. It assumed the book of business previously handled through Town and Village Insurance Company Services and operated as a mutual property-and-casualty insurer. In its initial form, Grange was an assessment company whose market was restricted to members of the Ohio State Grange. The company progressively expanded beyond automobile insurance. It added hospitalization coverage in 1942 and general liability insurance in 1944. Fire and extended coverages were introduced in 1955, by which point Grange had become a multiline insurer. In 1958, the company became independent of the Ohio State Grange and began offering its products to the general public in Ohio. This was an important transition from a member-based insurance arrangement to a broader regional insurance business. Grange's subsequent development included expansion through relationships with other insurers. In 2002, Grange Mutual Casualty Company partnered with Integrity Insurance. The affiliation enabled the Grange organization to serve policyholders in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota and contributed to the group's later multi-company structure. The Grange Mutual Holding Company family came to include Grange Insurance Company, Grange Property & Casualty Insurance Company, Trustgard Insurance Company, Grange Indemnity Insurance Company, Grange Insurance Company of Michigan, Integrity Insurance Company, Integrity Select Insurance Company, and Integrity Property & Casualty Company. The organization also maintained a life-insurance business for part of its history. On October 1, 2018, Grange Life Insurance Company was acquired by Kansas City Life Insurance Company. Grange subsequently stopped offering life insurance, leaving property-and-casualty coverage as its principal business focus. In 2019, Grange Mutual Casualty Company converted its corporate structure to a mutual holding-company structure. The resulting organization is commonly known as Grange Insurance or Grange Mutual Holding Company. It operates in 13 states and distributes personal and business insurance through more than 4,000 independent agents. Its historical evolution therefore combines a member-oriented Ohio origin, expansion into multiline coverage, separation from its founding fraternal constituency, regional geographic growth, and a later reorganization around a mutual holding-company model.
