Overview
Geojit Financial Services is an Indian investment-services company headquartered in Kochi, Kerala. Founded by C. J. George in 1987, the business developed from a small securities partnership into a publicly listed financial-services group serving retail investors, affluent clients, institutions, and overseas Indians. Its activities cover equity and derivatives broking, online trading, depository and dematerialization services, mutual-fund distribution and advisory, life and general insurance, commodities derivatives, portfolio-management services, and related investment products. The company’s early development was closely connected with the growth of organized securities markets in Kerala and India. C. J. George initially established C. J. George and Co. in 1987, with Ranajit Kanjilal becoming a partner after obtaining membership in the Cochin Stock Exchange. The firm adopted the Geojit name in 1988. After Kanjilal’s departure in 1992, the enterprise continued as a sole proprietorship before being incorporated as Geojit Securities Ltd. in 1994. It became one of the early brokerage businesses in Kochi to convert into a public company. Geojit expanded its institutional and market infrastructure during the 1990s. The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation became a co-promoter in 1995, and the company completed a public issue that year. It also joined the National Stock Exchange and later became a member of the Bombay Stock Exchange. Depository services were introduced in 1997, giving customers access to dematerialized securities holdings, while online trading was launched in February 2000. These steps positioned Geojit as an early Indian adopter of internet-based retail securities trading. The company subsequently broadened beyond conventional equity broking. It entered commodity trading with rubber in 2003 and added cardamom in 2004, later supporting trading in commodities such as pepper, gold, and silver. It also developed technology capabilities through Geojit Technologies and established Geojit Credits as a Reserve Bank of India-registered non-banking financial company. Mutual funds, insurance, portfolio services, and investment products became part of a wider platform intended to address multiple stages of the retail-investor relationship. Geojit has also used partnerships and overseas associates to extend its reach. Its Indian distribution network has covered hundreds of offices and numerous cities, while associated operations have served clients in Gulf markets including the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The company has maintained business-to-business relationships with banks and other financial institutions for distribution and investment services. A strategic relationship with BNP Paribas became an important element in the company’s shareholder and business structure, while the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and Indian market investors have also been associated with its ownership history. In the digital-investing segment, Geojit introduced Funds Genie in 2018 as a mutual-fund investment and advisory platform. The company’s current proposition combines brokerage and trading access with investment distribution, portfolio-oriented services, and financial planning. Its brand is primarily positioned around broad retail-investor access, market connectivity, and a mix of physical branch support and digital tools rather than around a single investment product. Geojit remains listed on both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.
History
Geojit traces its origins to C. J. George and Co., established by C. J. George in 1987. Ranajit Kanjilal became a partner after securing membership in the Cochin Stock Exchange, and the business adopted the Geojit name in 1988. The name combined elements of the names of the original partners. Kanjilal left the organization in 1992, after which Geojit operated as a sole proprietorship for a period. The business began building a branch network in Kerala in 1993, opening offices in Muvattupuzha and Trichur. In 1994 it was incorporated as Geojit Securities Ltd., becoming one of the early brokerage firms in Kochi to become a public limited company. In 1995, the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation acquired a substantial stake and became a co-promoter. The same year, Geojit completed a public issue, joined the National Stock Exchange, and opened its first NSE terminal in Kochi. The public issue was reported as heavily oversubscribed, providing capital for subsequent expansion. Geojit entered the depository business in 1997, enabling customers to hold securities in dematerialized form. It joined the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1999, and its shares were listed on the BSE in 2000. The launch of online trading in February 2000 was a significant technology and distribution milestone, helping the company reach investors through internet-based channels. The company diversified into commodities during the 2000s. Rubber trading began in 2003, followed by cardamom in 2004. Its commodity activities later included products such as pepper, gold, and silver. In 2005, investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala acquired a significant interest and joined the board. That year Geojit also established Geojit Technologies to develop financial-services technology and launched Geojit Credits, an RBI-registered non-banking financial company. During the following years, the company expanded its product range to include equities, derivatives, mutual funds, insurance, portfolio-management services, and other investment offerings. It also developed partnerships with banks and expanded through joint ventures and associates in the Middle East. Overseas offices and associated operations were established in Gulf locations including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, Muscat, Riyadh, Dammam, Bahrain, and Kuwait. In 2012, Geojit launched services for Qualified Foreign Investors. In 2018, it introduced Funds Genie, a mutual-fund advisory and investment platform. The company continues to combine a large Indian office network with online investment and trading services and remains listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.
