Overview
GE Energy was a General Electric division focused on technologies, equipment, services, and project capabilities for electricity generation, transmission, industrial energy management, and related infrastructure. It was not an independently listed company but one of the principal operating businesses within GE's industrial portfolio. The name was used during a period of organizational change in the mid-to-late 2000s, following the earlier GE Power Systems organization and preceding the later GE Power structure. The business inherited a long industrial history from General Electric. GE had supplied electrical machinery and power-generation equipment for major infrastructure projects, including a large three-phase generator associated with the development of Niagara Falls in 1918 and generating equipment installed at Grand Coulee Dam in 1942. GE Power Systems was originally based in Schenectady, New York, before moving its center of operations to Atlanta in 2000. Its scope included power-generation technology, energy services, energy management, distributed power, oil and gas activities, and rental or temporary-generation solutions. Acquisitions such as Enter Software in 2001 and Enron's wind-related business in 2002 broadened the portfolio. GE Energy was formed and reshaped amid a wider General Electric reorganization. Its activities covered conventional thermal generation, gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, boilers, renewable generation, grid and electrical equipment, nuclear-related services, water treatment, oil and gas technology, and energy consulting. The business therefore operated less as a single consumer-facing brand than as a collection of industrial businesses marketed to utilities, independent power producers, industrial companies, governments, and infrastructure developers. A major strategic expansion occurred in 2015, when GE completed its acquisition of Alstom's power-generation and electricity-transmission activities. The acquired businesses added turbine, generator, grid, hydro, and service capabilities and materially increased GE's presence in international power infrastructure. Some of the acquired and existing activities were subsequently separated into businesses such as GE Renewable Energy, GE Energy Connections, and GE Power. In 2017, GE Energy Connections was combined with GE Power & Water to form the GE Power business, led by Scott Strazik. Other portfolio changes included the combination of GE Oil & Gas with Baker Hughes, the sale of Industrial Solutions to ABB, the sale of Water & Process Technologies to Suez, and the divestiture of distributed power to Advent International. GE Energy and its successor businesses also faced technical and market pressures. A turbine-blade failure affecting a GE 9FB gas turbine in Texas in 2015 led to a lengthy outage and prompted changes to protective coatings and heat-treatment processes. The issue attracted attention because related blade technology was also used in newer HA-series turbines. At the corporate level, weak financial results and changing economics in conventional generation led GE to reduce costs, sell assets, and place greater strategic emphasis on renewable energy and selected industrial technologies. In 2021, General Electric announced a plan to separate its principal businesses into GE HealthCare, GE Vernova, and GE Aerospace. GE Power, together with GE Renewable Energy, GE Digital, and GE Energy Financial Services, was allocated to GE Vernova. The separation was completed on April 2, 2024. General Electric subsequently focused on aviation and adopted the GE Aerospace identity, while GE Vernova became the independent successor platform for much of the former energy portfolio. GE Energy is therefore a historical and organizational brand rather than an active standalone business.
History
GE Energy developed from General Electric's longstanding power-equipment operations and the GE Power Systems organization. GE's industrial involvement in electricity generation extended back many decades before the GE Energy name was used. Notable historical work included a high-capacity three-phase generator associated with Niagara Falls in 1918 and generating equipment installed at Grand Coulee Dam in 1942. GE Power Systems operated as a supplier of power-generation equipment, energy services, energy-management systems, distributed-generation solutions, and related oil and gas technologies. The organization was initially associated with Schenectady, New York, but moved its base to Atlanta in 2000. It expanded through acquisitions, including Enter Software in 2001 and Enron's wind-related business in 2002. The GE Energy division was created or reshaped during General Electric's 2008 reorganization. Its activities were drawn from GE Infrastructure businesses and covered a broad set of energy markets. These included gas and steam generation, generators, boilers, renewable energy, energy management, grid equipment, power conversion, oil and gas, nuclear technology, water treatment, consulting, and temporary power. The breadth of the portfolio reflected GE's approach of combining equipment manufacturing with long-term service contracts, engineering, and project support. In 2011, GE Energy announced the planned acquisition of a 90% stake in Converteam, a French power-conversion company. In 2012, the organization was restructured after John Krenicki announced that he would step down as its president. The former GE Energy scope was divided among businesses including GE Energy Management, GE Oil & Gas, and GE Power & Water, with further subgroups for digital energy, industrial solutions, power conversion, renewable energy, nuclear energy, and water technology. GE's 2015 acquisition of Alstom's power-generation and transmission activities was one of the most significant events in the division's later history. The transaction added major gas, steam, hydro, grid, and service operations. The acquired hydro and wind operations were later combined with GE's own wind activities in GE Renewable Energy. In 2017, GE Oil & Gas was combined with Baker Hughes, while GE Energy Connections was merged with GE Power & Water to form GE Power under Scott Strazik. GE then sold or separated several other businesses: ABB acquired Industrial Solutions, Suez acquired Water & Process Technologies, and Advent International acquired distributed power. The conventional power business encountered both technical and economic challenges. In 2015, a blade failure at a GE 9FB gas turbine in Texas caused an extended outage and led GE to revise protective coatings and heat-treatment methods. The incident received additional attention because similar blade technology was used in newer HA turbines. At the same time, weaker financial performance and the rapid growth of renewable generation encouraged GE to reduce costs, sell assets, and reorganize its power activities. GE Steam Power continued to support nuclear and conventional power projects. In 2019, it began producing half-speed steam turbines for the Akkuyu nuclear project in Turkey through the AAEM joint venture with a Rosatom subsidiary. In 2022, EDF agreed to acquire GE Steam Power's nuclear activities, including selected equipment and service capabilities outside the United States. General Electric announced in 2021 that it would separate into three public companies: GE HealthCare, GE Vernova, and GE Aerospace. The energy businesses, including GE Power, GE Renewable Energy, GE Digital, and GE Energy Financial Services, were assigned to GE Vernova. The transaction was completed on April 2, 2024. GE Energy consequently ceased to exist as an active standalone GE division, while its successor activities continued under GE Vernova and other successor arrangements.
