Freibahn was a German industrial manufacturer associated with the development of large road-going steam trains in the first decade of the twentieth century. Freibahn exhibited internationally and received a grand prize in the road-transport category at the 1906 international fair in Milan. Its principal product was a multi-axle road train with a steam locomotive, tender and trailers. History
Freibahn developed out of the railway-equipment business associated with Arthur Koppel. Koppel had previously worked with Benno Orenstein in founding Orenstein & Koppel, a company active in narrow-gauge railway equipment. The early business dealt mainly in the sale of narrow-gauge tracks and tipper wagons rather than in the manufacture of complete motor vehicles. In 1876, Orenstein provided a loan of 3,000 marks obtained from an uncle, while Koppel contributed 15,000 marks after his earlier work as an authorized officer at the G. E. Dellschau iron-trading company. The business initially expanded slowly. A trailer articulation mechanism operated by hand crank allowed individual trailers to move relative to one another and reduced the turning radius to approximately six or seven metres. The original steam system did not produce a commercially successful business. In 1908, Freibahn replaced the steam engine with a gasoline engine, apparently seeking a more practical and flexible power source.
