Fleetmatics was a software-as-a-service provider focused on fleet management and vehicle telematics. Its web-based and mobile services supplied commercial fleet operators with information such as vehicle location, speed, mileage, and fuel usage. The company’s products were intended to help businesses improve dispatching, monitor vehicle utilization, manage field operations, and support safer and more efficient driving practices. The company operated in a market shaped by the digitization of commercial fleets. Fleetmatics continued to have product and regulatory activity after the acquisition; in October 2017, its Android Electronic Logging Device was registered with the United States Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. In March 2018, Fleetmatics, Telogis, and Verizon Telematics were rebranded as Verizon Connect. The Fleetmatics name therefore ceased to function as an independent operating brand, although its technology, customers, and product capabilities became part of Verizon Connect’s broader fleet-management portfolio. The acquisition occurred during a period when fleet telematics was becoming increasingly connected with field-service software, mobile work management, and regulatory compliance. Fleetmatics’ product model combined recurring software subscriptions with vehicle and telematics data, allowing customers to monitor fleets through online and mobile interfaces. On 1 August 2016, Verizon announced its intention to acquire Fleetmatics for $2.4 billion in cash. Verizon viewed the transaction as a way to broaden its telematics activities and strengthen its position in connected fleet services. The deal closed in November 2016, after which Fleetmatics became part of Verizon’s telematics organization rather than continuing as an independent public-facing business. The Fleetmatics product and technology portfolio remained active after the acquisition. In October 2017, Fleetmatics registered an Android electronic logging device with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. This reflected the increasing importance of electronic logging and compliance-related tools in commercial transportation and demonstrated that the acquired business continued to develop products for regulated fleet operations. On 6 March 2018, Verizon announced a unified brand structure under Verizon Connect. Fleetmatics, Telogis, and Verizon Telematics were rebranded as Verizon Connect. The change ended Fleetmatics’ life as a standalone brand, but its capabilities and customer relationships were absorbed into Verizon Connect’s broader platform. Fleetmatics is therefore best understood as a former fleet-software and telematics brand whose technology and business operations became part of Verizon’s connected-fleet portfolio.
