Overview
Finlandia Vodka is a Finnish spirits brand established in 1970 by Alko, Finland's state-owned alcohol company. The brand is built around a combination of Finnish-grown six-row barley, a highly rectified neutral spirit, and glacial spring water drawn at the historic Rajamäki site north of Helsinki. Its production heritage reaches back to an 1888 distillery founded beside a glacial spring in Rajamäki, while the initial distillation of the barley spirit is carried out at Koskenkorva in western Finland. The brand's manufacturing model separates distillation from blending and bottling. Fermented barley is distilled at the Koskenkorva facility using a continuous multi-column process. The resulting neutral spirit is transported to Rajamäki, where it is blended with naturally filtered glacial spring water and, for flavored products, flavoring ingredients. The company describes the spring water as having passed through sand and glacial moraine, allowing it to be used without deionization, reverse osmosis, or comparable artificial purification. The production process and the Finnish landscape have been central to the brand's identity and communications. Finlandia entered the United States in 1971, becoming the first Nordic vodka sold there and one of the first imported vodkas marketed in the premium segment. It subsequently developed into an international brand distributed in more than 100 countries. Its packaging and advertising have repeatedly emphasized coldness, clarity, glacial origins, Finnish design, and the perceived distance of Finland from conventional urban spirits production. Ownership changed progressively from the Finnish state alcohol system to Brown-Forman. Brown-Forman acquired an initial minority stake in 2000, increased its holding in 2002, and completed the purchase of the remaining interest in 2004. Brown-Forman later considered a possible sale, but no transaction occurred at that time. In 2023, Coca-Cola HBC agreed to acquire Brown-Forman Finland Oy, the entity owning Finlandia Vodka, for approximately $220 million; the transaction was completed later that year. The brand is therefore part of Coca-Cola HBC's beverage portfolio, while its Finnish production heritage remains central to its market positioning. Finlandia is sold in an unflavored flagship expression and a range of flavored vodkas. Flavors introduced over time have included cranberry, lime, mango, red berry, wild berries, grapefruit, tangerine, and blackcurrant. The brand has also used prominent entertainment and lifestyle marketing, including a 2002 association with the James Bond film Die Another Day and later campaigns encouraging consumers to pursue a less routine or “less ordinary” life. Its bottle has undergone several major redesigns, including the original Frozen Ice concept, the Hammered Ice treatment, the Glacial Ice bottle, and the Melting Ice form. Today, Finlandia remains an active internationally distributed vodka brand associated with Finnish origin, glacial water, modern Nordic design, and premium accessibility.
History
Finlandia Vodka's industrial history is rooted in the Rajamäki distillery in southern Finland. The distillery was established in 1888 by Dr. Wilhelm Juslin beside a glacial spring in the village of Rajamäki, in the Nurmijärvi area. After Finland adopted alcohol prohibition in 1920, the Finnish state acquired the facility to secure alcohol for pharmacies and other permitted non-beverage uses. When prohibition ended in 1932, the state retained exclusive control over vodka production. Alko, Finland's state-owned alcoholic beverage company, introduced the Finlandia brand in 1970. The brand quickly pursued international expansion, entering the United States in 1971 as the first Nordic vodka sold in that market and an early imported vodka positioned in the premium category. A new alcoholic beverage plant was built at Rajamäki in 1975. Distillation was later centralized at the Koskenkorva facility in 1987, while Rajamäki continued to serve as the location for blending, processing, and bottling. The brand's production identity combines two Finnish locations. At Koskenkorva, Finnish-grown six-row barley is fermented and distilled into a high-strength neutral spirit. The process uses a continuous multi-column system and extensive rectification to remove unwanted compounds. The spirit is then transported roughly 315 kilometers to Rajamäki, where it is diluted with water from the local glacial spring. The water's passage through glacial sand and moraine is a major part of the brand story and is presented as a natural filtration process. Flavored variants receive additional flavoring during the finishing stage. Ownership was gradually transferred from Finland's state-linked alcohol business to Brown-Forman. Brown-Forman acquired 45 percent of Finlandia Vodka Worldwide in 2000, with Altia retaining the balance. In 2002, Brown-Forman purchased a further 35 percent, and in 2004 it acquired the remaining 20 percent, taking full control. Brown-Forman explored a possible divestment in 2016, but the brand remained in its portfolio. In 2023, Coca-Cola HBC announced an agreement to purchase Brown-Forman Finland Oy for about $220 million. Because that company owned Finlandia Vodka, the transaction moved the brand into Coca-Cola HBC's portfolio and was completed later in 2023. Marketing has consistently linked Finlandia to purity, coldness, Finnish nature, and distinctive design. Early campaigns focused on vodka taste and the idea of a spirit for committed vodka drinkers. Later work highlighted the brand's glacial-water origin through the “Past Lives” platform, the “Refresh” campaign, and “Vodka from a Purer Place.” Finlandia also secured a high-profile entertainment association as the official vodka connected with the James Bond film Die Another Day in 2002. Its 2013 “To the life less ordinary” campaign reframed the production method and Finnish setting as an invitation to reject routine. Packaging has been another important historical asset. Tapio Wirkkala's original Frozen Ice bottle used textured glass, reindeer imagery, and an Arctic visual language. The 1998 Hammered Ice design replaced the conventional paper label with lacquered lettering. The 2003 Glacial Ice bottle, developed by Harri Koskinen with New York design partners and the Finlandia packaging team, made the melting-ice idea more explicit. In 2011, Finlandia introduced the Melting Ice bottle, again drawing on Koskinen's work and additional industrial design input. These successive forms helped the brand maintain a recognizable Finnish and glacial identity while updating its shelf presence. Finlandia expanded its portfolio beyond unflavored vodka through variants introduced from the 1990s onward. Cranberry appeared in 1994, followed by lime in 1999, mango and red berry in 2004, wild berries in 2005, grapefruit in 2006, and tangerine and blackcurrant in 2009. The brand continues to operate as an active internationally distributed vodka label, with production and bottling associated with Finland and ownership held by Coca-Cola HBC.
