Overview

EZchip Semiconductor Ltd. was an Israeli fabless semiconductor company focused on processors for Ethernet networking equipment. Based in Yokneam, Israel, the company developed and marketed network processors intended to handle packet processing, traffic management, and other computation-intensive functions in communications infrastructure. Its products were aimed primarily at equipment manufacturers serving telecommunications, enterprise networking, data-center, and carrier markets rather than at consumer electronics users. The company was founded in 1999 by Eli Fruchter and Alex Tal. Fruchter was an electrical-engineering graduate of the Technion and a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces' 8200 intelligence unit. Tal became the company's first chief technology officer and vice president of research and development. EZchip initially operated as a subsidiary of LANOptics, a company involved in Ethernet switching chips and security software. This structure gave the business a corporate platform while it developed its own network-processor activities. A major corporate transition occurred in January 2008, when LANOptics completed the full acquisition of EZchip. LANOptics then adopted the EZchip name and changed its Nasdaq ticker from LNOP to EZCH. The reorganization made EZchip the public-facing identity of the combined business and marked a shift toward the network-processor business as the company's central focus. During the period leading to February 2012, EZchip's shares rose approximately 40 percent over twelve months, amid increasing demand for its processors and market speculation that the company could become an acquisition target. No financial interpretation is made here beyond the reported share-price movement. EZchip expanded its technology portfolio in July 2014 by acquiring Tilera for $130 million in cash. Tilera developed high-performance multicore processors, intelligent network-interface cards, and white-box appliances for data-center networking. The transaction broadened EZchip beyond conventional network processors and added multicore computing capabilities relevant to software-defined networking, data-center infrastructure, and other packet-intensive workloads. The company's independent existence ended through its combination with Mellanox Technologies. In January 2016, EZchip shareholders approved the proposed merger, and Mellanox completed the acquisition on February 23, 2016. EZchip therefore became part of Mellanox rather than continuing as a standalone publicly traded company. Mellanox was subsequently acquired by NVIDIA in 2020, but the available reference material does not establish the continuing status of the EZchip brand or product lines within NVIDIA and Mellanox's later businesses. The company is consequently classified here as defunct as an independent corporate entity.

History

EZchip Semiconductor was established in 1999 in Israel by Eli Fruchter and Alex Tal. Fruchter brought an electrical-engineering background from the Technion and experience in the Israel Defense Forces' 8200 intelligence unit, while Tal became the first chief technology officer and vice president of research and development. The company developed network processors for Ethernet infrastructure, concentrating on the specialized silicon required to process and direct network traffic at high speed. For much of its early history, EZchip operated as a subsidiary of LANOptics. LANOptics was associated with Ethernet switching chips and security software, providing the corporate setting in which EZchip developed its network-processor business. In January 2008, LANOptics completed the full acquisition of EZchip. Following that transaction, LANOptics changed its corporate name to EZchip and changed its Nasdaq ticker from LNOP to EZCH. The change elevated EZchip from a subsidiary name to the principal identity of the publicly traded company. EZchip's business benefited from demand for increasingly capable networking processors. Its products were designed for communications and networking equipment, where packet processing and traffic management could be offloaded from general-purpose processors. Over the twelve months leading to February 2012, the company's shares increased by about 40 percent, according to the cited reference material. The rise coincided with stronger demand for its processors and speculation that EZchip might be acquired. In July 2014, EZchip broadened its technology base through the acquisition of Tilera for $130 million in cash. Tilera specialized in high-performance multicore processors, intelligent network-interface cards, and white-box appliances for data-center networking equipment. The acquisition complemented EZchip's network-processing expertise with additional multicore computing and data-center technologies. EZchip's independent corporate history concluded with its acquisition by Mellanox Technologies. In January 2016, EZchip shareholders approved the merger, and the transaction was completed on February 23, 2016. After completion, EZchip no longer operated as a standalone listed company. The available material does not document the subsequent treatment of every EZchip product or the continued use of the EZchip name, so no further brand-status claims are made here.

Products and positioning

A specialist infrastructure-semiconductor supplier focused on programmable packet processing and high-performance computing technologies for networking equipment, communications systems, and data-center infrastructure.

  • Networking semiconductors

    Ethernet network processors

EZchip's principal product category consisted of processors designed for Ethernet networking equipment. These chips handled specialized packet-processing and traffic-management workloads in communications infrastructure, allowing equipment makers to build systems capable of processing network traffic at high speed. The products were sold into infrastructure markets rather than positioned as consumer-facing processors.

  • Multicore processors

    Tilera multicore processors

Tilera's high-performance multicore processors became part of EZchip's portfolio through the 2014 acquisition. The technology provided parallel processing capabilities relevant to networking, communications, and data-center workloads, complementing EZchip's existing focus on packet-processing silicon.

  • Data-center networking equipment

Intelligent network-interface cards and white-box appliances

Tilera also developed intelligent network-interface cards and white-box appliances for data-center networking equipment. These offerings extended the acquired technology beyond individual processor chips toward system-level networking infrastructure and programmable data-center deployments.
