Overview
Ewbank is a British cleaning-products and floor-care brand with origins in Accrington, Lancashire, where it was established in 1864. The business began as a manufacturer of water meters, but its later development into domestic cleaning equipment made the Ewbank name particularly associated with carpet sweepers and practical household floor care. The brand takes its name from the Ewbank area of Accrington, where its factory was located. The company’s early history was connected with John Ramsbottom and George Hacking, who founded the business. They were later joined by John Haworth, James Entwisle, and James Kenyon. After the original founders retired, the business became Entwisle and Kenyon Limited. Around 1875, Entwisle and Kenyon expanded into washing machines and mangles, establishing an early connection with domestic utility products. A major turning point came in 1882, when Richard Walton Kenyon travelled to the United States to obtain wooden blocks for mangle production. During the trip, he saw a carpet-sweeper factory in Chicago and recognized that a comparable product could have substantial potential in Britain. He subsequently designed a carpet sweeper for the Ewbank business. The product went on sale in 1889 and became a leading product in its category in the United Kingdom. The brand’s success was sufficiently strong that carpet sweeping became popularly described as “ewbanking.” Models included the Standard and Parlour Queen, together with smaller versions made for children. After the Second World War, Ewbank developed into a significant floor-care manufacturer with activity in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other international markets. Its traditional sweepers originally used metal casings, while later models adopted Novodur by the mid-1970s. During that period, the brand was owned by Prestige. It was acquired by Earlex Ltd in 2003 and became independent again in November 2013. Following its return to independence, the business established subsidiary companies in the United States and Hong Kong. Ewbank’s current portfolio extends well beyond its historic manual sweeper. It includes corded and cordless vacuum cleaners, floor cleaners and polishers, carpet and upholstery cleaners, steam cleaners, carpet shampooers, spray mops, pressure washers, and outdoor sweepers. Its modern product families include the SPEEDSWEEP and EVO3 sweepers; MOTION corded vacuum cleaners; AIR cordless stick vacuums; AIRSTORM and ACTIVE+ vacuum models; HYDRO carpet and upholstery cleaners; STEAMDYNAMO steam cleaners; and the AQUABLAST160 pressure washer. In 2024, the brand added the MULTISWEEP manual push sweeper for indoor and outdoor surfaces. Bluestem Group began licensing the Ewbank name in 2019 and assumed responsibility for product development, distribution, and marketing in the United Kingdom. Bluestem acquired the brand in 2023 and has since focused on additional product development and marketing. Ewbank therefore combines a highly recognizable heritage product—the manually operated carpet sweeper—with a broader contemporary cleaning-appliance proposition aimed at household floor care, spot cleaning, sanitization, and outdoor maintenance.
History
Ewbank traces its origins to Accrington, Lancashire, in 1864. John Ramsbottom and George Hacking established the original business, which initially manufactured water meters. John Haworth, James Entwisle, and James Kenyon subsequently joined the enterprise. When the first founders retired, the company was reorganized under the name Entwisle and Kenyon Limited. The company broadened its manufacturing activities around 1875, when it began producing washing machines and mangles. These products placed the business within the developing market for domestic labor-saving equipment. The most consequential change in its history followed a visit by Richard Walton Kenyon to the United States in 1882. Kenyon had travelled there in search of wooden blocks used in mangles, but while in Chicago he encountered a factory producing carpet sweepers. He saw an opportunity to adapt the idea for British households and designed a sweeper for the Ewbank business. The first Ewbank carpet sweeper reached the market in 1889. It became the company’s defining product and a leading British example of its type. The brand produced multiple models, including the Standard and Parlour Queen, as well as miniature sweepers designed for children. The popularity of the product helped create the expression “ewbanking” for carpet sweeping in Britain. The name Ewbank itself came from the Ewbank district of Accrington, the location associated with the company’s factory. Following the Second World War, Ewbank established a stronger position in floor-care products and developed a presence in Britain, the United States, and other international markets. Early sweepers were made with metal casings. By the middle of the 1970s, later sweepers were being produced with Novodur, reflecting changes in materials and product construction. By that period, the brand was owned by Prestige. Ownership changed again in 2003, when Earlex Ltd acquired the company. Ewbank became independent once more in November 2013 and subsequently established subsidiary companies in the United States and Hong Kong. This period preserved the brand’s international reach while allowing it to continue developing products beyond the original manual sweeper. The modern range expanded into several categories of household and outdoor cleaning. Alongside traditional carpet sweepers, Ewbank introduced corded and cordless vacuum cleaners, floor cleaners and polishers, carpet and upholstery cleaners, steam cleaners, carpet shampooers, spray mops, pressure washers, and outdoor sweepers. The HYDRO range of carpet cleaners was launched in 2020, following the company’s earlier production of simpler manual carpet shampooers. The STEAMDYNAMO and STEAMDYNAMO+ broadened the brand into steam-based cleaning, while the AQUABLAST160 represented an expansion into outdoor pressure washing. Bluestem Group began licensing the Ewbank brand in 2019. Under the licensing arrangement, Bluestem oversaw product development, distribution, and United Kingdom marketing. In 2023, Bluestem acquired Ewbank outright and continued investment in new products and marketing. Recent products include the SPEEDSWEEP and EVO3 manual sweepers, MOTION corded vacuums, AIR cordless stick vacuums, AIRSTORM and ACTIVE+ models, the HYDROC2 carpet cleaner, and the MULTISWEEP sweeper launched in 2024. The brand’s development therefore represents a transition from a specialist Victorian carpet-sweeper maker to a broader floor-care and domestic-cleaning brand, while retaining the manual sweeper as its central heritage association.
