History
Everllence’s corporate history is rooted in the development of German mechanical engineering and the industrial businesses that eventually formed the MAN group. The St. Antony ironworks, founded in Oberhausen in 1758, later became part of the industrial lineage of Gutehoffnungshütte. In Augsburg, Sander’sche Maschinenfabrik was established in 1840. After a sequence of combinations involving Augsburg and Nuremberg engineering companies, Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, abbreviated MAN, was created in 1908. MAN became an important participant in the early history of diesel power. Between 1893 and 1897, its engineers worked with Rudolf Diesel on a single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Further experimentation led to early two-stroke diesel engines, opposed-piston designs and power-generation applications. MAN built a diesel power plant in Kyiv in 1905, began marine-engine construction with Blohm+Voss in 1910 and supplied engines for MS Selandia, an ocean-going vessel that entered service in 1912 as an early example of diesel-powered shipping. Gutehoffnungshütte acquired a majority position in MAN in 1921, bringing ironmaking, mechanical engineering and commercial-vehicle activities into a wider industrial group. From the 1920s onward, MAN developed increasingly powerful two-stroke engines for marine use. The company’s wartime history is connected to the German armaments economy. During the Second World War, the Gutehoffnungshütte and MAN industrial complex expanded production connected with the German war effort, including tanks, submarine engines and shell casings. Several thousand prisoners of war from a number of European countries were forced to work for MAN. Historical accounts describe especially harsh treatment of some Eastern European laborers. The broader group’s postwar history also included predecessor companies that had used concentration-camp detainees, although the reference material distinguishes those companies from MAN’s direct use of such labor. After the war, structural changes in global shipbuilding and rising engine-development costs reshaped the marine-engine industry. MAN acquired the Danish ship-engine designer and builder Burmeister & Wain in 1979–1980. This established a division of labor in which four-stroke development was centered in Augsburg while two-stroke development was carried out in Copenhagen. The B&W designation remains visible in the marketing of some of the company’s largest two-stroke engines. MAN produced a two-stroke large diesel engine exceeding 50 percent efficiency in 1982, and the GHH group was integrated into MAN in 1986. The modern corporate entity emerged from the consolidation of MAN’s engine and turbomachinery activities. MAN Diesel and MAN Turbo were merged in March 2010 under the name MAN Diesel & Turbo SE. Volkswagen acquired majority ownership of MAN SE in 2011. In 2018 the company was renamed MAN Energy Solutions SE, reflecting a strategic shift from a primarily conventional engine and machinery identity toward sustainable energy, hybrid systems, storage, digital services and low-emission marine fuels. The business was separated from MAN’s truck and bus activities during the same period. The sustainability-oriented strategy produced several technology and portfolio developments. In 2013 the company commissioned a methanisation reactor for a power-to-gas plant in Werlte. It began producing marine engines for synthetic fuels in 2015 and introduced a dual-fuel two-stroke engine for LPG operation in 2018. In 2019 it entered the hydrogen-equipment sector by acquiring a 40 percent interest in H-Tec Systems; that holding was increased to approximately 99 percent by 2021. The company also worked on a seawater-based large heat pump for Esbjerg, hydrogen-capable gas engines, synthetic-methane shipping and carbon-capture equipment. Later developments included the MAN 49/60 four-stroke engine series in 2022, ammonia-fuel trials in 2023, methanol-engine programs for Mærsk vessels, a large dual-fuel-engine order for Karpowership in 2024 and an Indian Navy fleet-support-ship order in 2025. On 4 June 2025, MAN Energy Solutions was renamed Everllence. The rebrand marked the current phase of the business as a Volkswagen-owned international supplier of marine propulsion, stationary engines, turbomachinery and decarbonization technologies.
