Overview
EuroCTP, formally European Consolidated Tape Provider B.V., is a Netherlands-based financial-market infrastructure venture created by 16 European stock exchanges. Its purpose is to aggregate and distribute trading data from fragmented equity markets across Europe. The venture was established against the background of the European Union's long-running effort to improve market-data transparency and support the Capital Markets Union. European equity trading takes place across national exchanges, multilateral trading facilities, systematic internalisers and other venues. Because information is distributed among these venues, investors and market participants have historically lacked a single, comprehensive view of prices, volumes and transactions across the Union. A consolidated tape is intended to bring together trading information from multiple sources and make it available through a common service. The concept is comparable to the consolidated tape and securities-information infrastructure that has operated in the United States for decades. EuroCTP was announced on 16 February 2023 and incorporated on 23 August 2023. Jorge Yzaguirre Scharfhausen was announced as chair of its supervisory board at incorporation, while the venture's management structure was disclosed in December 2023. Its shareholder base comprises exchanges operating regulated markets across all 27 EU member states, together with markets in European Free Trade Association countries including Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. The founding participants are the Athens, Bratislava, Bucharest, Budapest, Bulgarian, Cyprus, Deutsche Börse, Euronext, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Malta, Nasdaq Nordic, SIX, Warsaw, Vienna and Zagreb stock exchanges. The venture competed for the European Securities and Markets Authority mandate against several industry groupings. A consortium of Bloomberg, MarketAxess and Tradeweb withdrew from the process in December 2023. Other bidders included a group comprising Barclays, Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, UniCredit and BlackRock, as well as a joint bid from Cboe Global Markets and Aquis Exchange. On 19 December 2025, ESMA selected EuroCTP to provide the first EU consolidated tape for equities, covering shares and exchange-traded funds, for an initial five-year period under the revised Markets in Financial Instruments regulatory framework. The selection positioned EuroCTP as an important piece of European market infrastructure rather than as a conventional consumer-facing financial brand. Its service is aimed at exchanges, trading venues, investment firms, data users, regulators and other professional market participants. In May 2026, EuroCTP said that industry onboarding was at an advanced stage ahead of its planned go-live. Its long-term significance depends on the quality, timeliness, coverage and accessibility of the data it consolidates, as well as on effective coordination with contributing venues and European regulators.
History
EuroCTP emerged from the European Union's effort to address the fragmentation of its financial markets. Unlike the United States, which has operated consolidated equity-market reporting infrastructure since the 1970s, European trading information has traditionally been dispersed among national exchanges, alternative venues and other execution locations. This fragmentation made it more difficult for investors and other market users to assess trading activity across borders in a timely and complete manner. The European Commission's Capital Markets Union agenda and reforms associated with MiFID II and MiFIR created the policy framework for a European consolidated tape. The proposed service was intended to collect market data from trading venues and distribute it through a common source. European exchanges had initially expressed reservations about the Commission's plans, reflecting concerns about the commercial and operational implications of mandatory data contribution and the structure of the future service. EuroCTP was announced on 16 February 2023 as a consortium-backed response to this market-infrastructure challenge. It was incorporated as EuroCTP B.V. in the Netherlands on 23 August 2023. Jorge Yzaguirre Scharfhausen was announced as chair of the supervisory board at the time of incorporation. The management team was announced on 5 December 2023. The venture's founding shareholders comprise 16 stock exchanges: Athens Stock Exchange, Bratislava Stock Exchange, Bucharest Stock Exchange, Budapest Stock Exchange, Bulgarian Stock Exchange, Cyprus Stock Exchange, Deutsche Börse, Euronext, Ljubljana Stock Exchange, Luxembourg Stock Exchange, Malta Stock Exchange, Nasdaq Nordic, SIX, Warsaw Stock Exchange, Vienna Stock Exchange and Zagreb Stock Exchange. Collectively, these institutions operate regulated markets covering the European Union's 27 member states and associated European markets, including Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. EuroCTP was one of several candidates for the European Securities and Markets Authority's consolidated-tape procurement. A consortium of Bloomberg, MarketAxess and Tradeweb left the competition in December 2023. Other reported bidders included a group of Barclays, Crédit Agricole, Société Générale, UniCredit and BlackRock, and a partnership between Cboe Global Markets and Aquis Exchange. On 19 December 2025, ESMA selected EuroCTP to provide the first EU consolidated tape for equities, covering shares and exchange-traded funds, for a five-year period. This selection gave the venture a central role in implementing the Union's market-transparency objectives. In May 2026, EuroCTP stated that industry onboarding was advanced ahead of its planned go-live. The service's development remains closely connected to regulatory requirements, data-quality standards, venue participation and the practical needs of professional market-data users.
