History
Esterel Technologies was established in 2000 as a spin-off from Simulog, a French company whose own origins were connected to INRIA research. The company inherited a strong academic and industrial background in synchronous programming and formal methods. Its name came from the Esterel synchronous programming language, developed in the French research community and closely associated with Gérard Berry. The company’s first principal product was Esterel Studio. The product was intended to make synchronous programming concepts usable in commercial engineering environments. Early application areas included telecommunications and electronic design automation. Rather than treating software implementation as an isolated coding exercise, the Esterel approach emphasized executable or analyzable models, formal specifications, and systematic generation of implementation code. The transaction placed Esterel within a larger engineering-simulation software group and made it a wholly owned Ansys subsidiary. The acquisition complemented Ansys’s broader position in engineering analysis by adding specialized model-based development, verification, and code-generation capabilities for embedded systems.
