Overview

E.ON Digital Technology (EDT) is the central organization responsible for E.ON SE’s group-wide IT and digital activities. Based in Hannover, Germany, it works across E.ON’s international operations, setting strategic direction for IT and digital business, defining enterprise architecture and the portfolio of central digital-technology functions, and providing technology platforms for the wider group. The supplied company description says EDT has around 2,200 employees distributed across E.ON locations, with a presence particularly in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. The organization’s work combines technology services for E.ON’s existing businesses with development of digital products and business models. Examples described in the supplied source include digitally optimized positioning of wind-turbine rotors, intelligent control of energy networks and smart grids, charging-station billing for electric mobility, solar-storage solutions, and smart-home and smart-city applications. It also coordinates major IT service providers and use of IT infrastructure. These activities make EDT an internal technology and transformation organization serving the energy group, rather than a general-purpose consumer technology brand. Its organizational roots date to 2001, when is:energy was formed from IT-service companies associated with the predecessor utilities that combined to create E.ON Energie. Following a minority-share transfer in 2005, the company became wholly owned by E.ON and was renamed E.ON IS. In 2013, it was broadened into E.ON Business Services (EBS), combining IT management with group-wide finance and human-resources support. Following E.ON’s strategic reorganization, those other support functions were separated again, and from 1 January 2018 EBS was responsible only for E.ON’s IT. The organization adopted the name E.ON Digital Technology on 1 February 2019 as E.ON brought digital and IT/technology functions together. The source also records subsequent leadership changes through 2024, including the departure of Mario Pieper at the end of March 2024.

History

E.ON Digital Technology’s organizational history is rooted in the IT services of the utilities that preceded E.ON. Before PreussenElektra and Bayernwerk combined to create E.ON Energie in 2000, their IT services were delivered by synergis GmbH and GEDOS mbH. In 2001, those two companies’ activities were brought together in is:energy. Its shareholders were E.ON Energie AG, with 74.78%, and Cap Gemini Ernst & Young AG, with 25.22%. The organization expanded beyond Germany in its early years. In 2004, is:energy had around 1,300 employees across more than 30 locations, and its first foreign subsidiaries were established in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. In 2005, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young transferred its minority stake to E.ON regional utilities. Following that change in ownership, is:energy changed its name to E.ON IS and became wholly owned by E.ON. E.ON IS Bulgaria and E.ON IS Romania were established in the second half of that year. In 2006, E.ON IS added telecommunications services and continued its international expansion, establishing subsidiaries in Sweden and the United Kingdom. It opened an Italian branch in Milan in 2007, and established E.ON IS Netherlands at the end of 2008. The source reports that by 2007 the E.ON IS group had 2,700 employees in nine European countries. A significant change in scope took place on 1 October 2013, when E.ON Business Services GmbH was established as a multifunctional support unit. It combined group-wide finance and human-resources business services with IT steering. The resulting organization had three service towers, supplemented by shared cross-functional functions, and employed around 4,000 people. Following the 2016 division of the original E.ON into the new E.ON and Uniper, and E.ON’s associated strategic realignment under the Phoenix program, finance and human resources were again organized more decentrally. E.ON Business Services was dissolved as a multifunctional unit effective 31 December 2017. From 1 January 2018, the company’s remit was limited to E.ON’s IT; finance and human-resources functions were integrated into E.ON SE functions or the relevant country units. The organization’s shift from IT services toward an integrated digital and technology remit began in 2018. Matthew Timms succeeded Edgar Aschenbrenner as chair of the management in September, while the CIO role was broadened to Chief Digital and Technology Officer. The integration of digital and IT/technology functions was reflected in the renaming of E.ON Business Services to E.ON Digital Technology, effective 1 February 2019. As innogy businesses were integrated into E.ON, former innogy CIO Marcus Schaper joined EDT’s management in January 2020. From June 2020, the source describes two Chief Digital and Technology Officers: Timms was responsible for Business Transformation and Schaper for Platforms and Operations. Both relinquished their mandates in 2021, when Christopher d’Arcy and Sebastian Weber were appointed managing directors, without a chair of management. Mario Pieper joined as a fourth managing director in November 2021. Verena Nicolaus-Kronenberg succeeded Christoph Hanewinkel as CFO and management-board member on 1 October 2022. Pieper left the company at the end of March 2024.
