Overview
Eng Wah Global is a Singaporean business group whose origins lie in film importing, film screening, and cinema operation. Founded in 1946 by Goh Eng Wah and a business partner, the enterprise initially imported and screened Shanghai films at Singapore's Happy World Amusement Park in Geylang. Its performance venue was later renovated and opened as Victory Theatre, establishing the foundation for a cinema business that expanded across Singapore's urban and suburban town centres. The company developed a broad cinema network during the 1960s through the 1990s. It operated venues including Jubilee Hall at Raffles Hotel, King's Theatre in Tiong Bahru, Marina Theatre, and cinemas in HDB towns such as Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Clementi, Kallang, Pasir Ris, Bukit Batok, and Sembawang. This expansion made Eng Wah one of Singapore's leading film exhibitors and distributors. It also entered downtown locations, including Suntec City, and participated in a joint venture with Shaw to manage the four-screen Lot 1 Cineplex at Lot 1 Shoppers' Mall in Choa Chu Kang. Eng Wah became the first cinema operator to list on the Singapore Exchange when Eng Wah Organisation was listed on 7 July 1994. During the same period, the group began converting traditional single-screen cinemas into broader entertainment centres combining cinema, retail, and leisure functions. This operating model later informed its involvement in shopping malls and mixed-use properties. The group was an early adopter of cinema technology and customer-engagement systems. In the early 2000s it introduced the Friends of Eng Wah online loyalty programme and an SMS-a-movie service. It also deployed a full 2K digital cinema system and commercially screened a full 2K-enabled digital film, becoming an early international pioneer of digital projection. In 2007, it showcased 4D digital cinema technology with a presentation of Spider-Man 3 at Suntec City. Over time, Eng Wah diversified beyond exhibition. Its activities came to include shopping malls, hotels, lifestyle businesses, and real estate in Singapore and Malaysia. Properties associated with the group include Jubilee Square in Ang Mo Kio and 321 Clementi in Clementi, as well as hotel assets connected with Fort Canning in Singapore and a hotel property in Malaysia. The former Toa Payoh Entertainment Centre was sold and subsequently renamed ERA Centre, while the former Empress Cineplex site was redeveloped as 321 Clementi. Eng Wah Cinemas was rebranded as WE Cinemas in April 2011. The brand later operated at 321 Clementi after a period without a cinema operation following the closure of earlier outlets. WE Cinemas announced the closure of its final cinema outlet in 2024, bringing the group's cinema-exhibition era to an end while the wider Eng Wah business remained associated with property and hospitality activities. Eng Wah and Sunset Hospitality Group agreed to transfer management of Hotel Fort Canning in the third quarter of 2025, with the property planned to operate as Mett Singapore. The group has also participated in public and community-facing initiatives. It has been a principal partner of Singapore's National Day Parade since 2007, supported Singapore's bid to host the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, and hosted the F!rst Film Fest in 2012 with the Institute of Technical Education. Its recognition has included placement on CIO Asia's CIO 100 list, a Singapore Heritage Brand Award, inclusion among the 100 Singapore Icons, and service-related recognition for its Suntec cinema.
History
Eng Wah's history began in 1946, when Goh Eng Wah and a partner established a business importing and screening Shanghai films in Singapore. They rented a performance stage at Happy World Amusement Park in Geylang, later renovating it into Victory Theatre. This venture placed the company within Singapore's developing commercial cinema culture and created the base for its later exhibition network. During the 1960s, the enterprise formalised its cinema operations as Eng Wah Theatres Organisation Pte Ltd. It expanded to Jubilee Hall at Raffles Hotel in 1966 and King's Theatre in Tiong Bahru in 1968. In the 1970s and 1980s, the company followed Singapore's residential expansion into HDB new towns, opening or operating cinemas in locations including Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio, Clementi, and Kallang. Its scale enabled it to become a significant film exhibitor and distributor in Singapore. The company entered the downtown market in 1988 after securing operating rights for Marina Theatre. In the 1990s it increasingly converted conventional cinemas into entertainment centres with retail and leisure components. Toa Payoh's cinema complex became Toa Payoh Entertainment Centre in 1997, while other conversions took place at Clementi, Ang Mo Kio, and elsewhere. Eng Wah also opened or expanded venues in Pasir Ris, Bukit Batok, Sembawang, and Suntec City. In 1996 it formed a joint venture with Shaw to manage the four-screen Lot 1 Cineplex in Choa Chu Kang. On 7 July 1994, Eng Wah Organisation became the first cinema operator in Singapore to list on the Singapore Exchange. The listing marked a significant stage in the group's corporate development, although the business later underwent restructuring. In 2008, it completed a reverse handover involving Transcu and sold properties to a company associated with Goh Eng Wah. Technology and service innovation were important parts of the group's cinema strategy. In the early 2000s, Eng Wah introduced an online loyalty programme called Friends of Eng Wah and an SMS-a-movie service. It was also an early adopter of full 2K digital cinema, becoming one of the first exhibitors outside the United States to deploy the technology and one of the first to commercially screen a full 2K digital film. In 2007 it presented a 4D digital cinema showcase using Spider-Man 3 at Suntec City. The group experimented with adjacent entertainment and hospitality businesses. A 2005 agreement with Crazy Horse ended in 2007 after weak patronage. Eng Wah also announced a major cinema refurbishment programme in the early 2010s and opened Hotel Fort Canning. The Suntec City cinema was renovated and rebranded under WE Cinemas, although that location was later taken over by Golden Village in connection with the merger of the Marina Square cinema operation. The former cinema estate was progressively rationalised. Toa Payoh Entertainment Centre closed in December 2010 and the property was later sold and renamed ERA Centre. Jubilee Cinema in Ang Mo Kio had previously been converted into Jubilee Entertainment Centre; its cinema component was eventually removed amid competition and declining ticket sales, and the site reopened in 2012 as Jubilee Square. The Empress Cineplex in Clementi closed for redevelopment in 2006, with the site reopening in 2015 as 321 Clementi. After a two-year period without cinema operations following the closure of West Mall and Suntec City outlets, a cinema at 321 Clementi opened in 2015. WE Cinemas announced the closure of its last cinema at 321 Clementi in 2024. This ended the group's cinema operations, which had lasted for nearly eight decades, while Eng Wah Global continued to be associated with property and hospitality interests. The group has owned or operated hotel properties in Singapore and Malaysia, including Hotel Fort Canning and The Legends Fort Canning Park. A management transfer agreed with Sunset Hospitality Group is scheduled for the third quarter of 2025, under which Hotel Fort Canning is to operate as Mett Singapore. Beyond commercial operations, Eng Wah has maintained a public-facing role through event partnerships. It has been a principal partner of Singapore's National Day Parade since 2007 and supported Singapore's bid for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. In 2012, WE Cinemas hosted the F!rst Film Fest with the Institute of Technical Education, featuring a short-film competition. The company has also received recognition including inclusion in CIO Asia's CIO 100 list, a Singapore Heritage Brand Award, a service-related award for its Suntec venue, and designation as one of the 100 Singapore Icons.
