History
E-mu Systems emerged from the early-1970s synthesizer scene in Santa Cruz, California. Dave Rossum, Steve Gabriel, and Jim Ketcham founded the company to build modular synthesizers, and Scott Wedge joined soon afterward. E-mu's first major technical contribution was a digitally scanned polyphonic keyboard system, developed and patented in 1973. Because the technology could be licensed, it reached instruments made by other manufacturers, including Oberheim and Sequential Circuits. E-mu also worked on synthesizer integrated circuits with Solid State Micro Technology. These activities gave the young company both engineering experience and royalty income. E-mu used that foundation to develop the Audity, its first non-modular synthesizer. Demonstrated at the 1980 AES Convention, the Audity was too expensive for broad production, but the same event helped redirect the company toward sampling. After seeing the Fairlight CMI and Linn LM-1, E-mu's engineers recognized that digital sampling was likely to become central to electronic music and that a less expensive product could open the technology to a much larger market. The Emulator, released in 1981, did exactly that relative to the Fairlight. The Drumulator followed in 1983 and made programmable sampled drum sounds available in a comparatively affordable standalone machine. Through the 1980s, E-mu developed a succession of important instruments. The Emulator II and Emulator III improved the company's sampler line, while the Emax offered another platform for sample-based production. The SP-12 and SP-1200 added sequencing and drum-oriented sampling functions. The SP-1200 in particular became closely associated with hip-hop production because it integrated drum samples, sample looping, and sequencing in one instrument. These products helped establish E-mu as a central supplier of digital production tools rather than merely a modular-synthesizer maker. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, E-mu expanded its sample-library strategy through rack-mounted sound modules. The Proteus, introduced around 1990, stored high-quality prerecorded sounds in ROM and offered a large palette at a lower price than many alternatives. Proteus variants addressed orchestral, world-music, and other applications. Related products included Pro/Cussion and Morpheus, while the company continued the Emulator line through the Emulator IV and E4 families. Creative Technology acquired E-mu in 1993. The acquisition gave Creative access to E-mu's synthesis and digital-audio engineering. E-mu technology, including the EMU8000 effect processor, was incorporated into Creative computer-audio products such as the Wave Blaster II and Sound Blaster AWE32. E-mu nevertheless retained a dedicated musical-instrument identity and continued releasing sound modules and workstations. Its 1996 Darwin system represented an attempt to enter digital multitrack hard-disk recording. Genre-focused modules such as Orbit, Planet Phatt, and Carnaval extended the Proteus-style format into electronic dance, hip-hop, trip-hop, and Latin music. In 1998, Creative combined E-mu with Ensoniq, another sampler and synthesizer manufacturer acquired by Creative. The combined business continued to develop E-mu-branded instruments, including the Proteus 2000 family and the XL7 and MP7 Command Stations. These tabletop workstations used more powerful polyphony, multitimbral operation, synthesis features, and multitrack sequencing. Related keyboard instruments broadened the same technology beyond rack and desktop formats. E-mu's professional computer-audio work became prominent during the 2003–2007 period. The E-MU Digital Audio Systems products were computer sound cards and interfaces for professional, semi-professional, and enthusiast users. The product numbers generally indicated input and output configurations, while the 'm' designation identified models with higher-quality analog circuitry. Although the products carried Creative Professional branding and used a DSP family related to Creative's audio hardware, E-mu emphasized independent development of the cards and drivers and omitted several consumer Sound Blaster features. The company then moved more decisively toward software. Emulator X, released in 2004, implemented the hardware-sampler concept on a PC and added synthesis capabilities. Proteus X followed in 2005 as a software sample player, and later Emulator X2 and X3 releases continued the software line. E-mu also released Xboard MIDI controllers, wireless transmitter and receiver equipment, and wireless performance keyboards during the late 2000s.
