Overview
Champagne Drappier is a family domaine created in 1808 around medieval caves in Urville, France. Its vineyard is planted in Urville and cultivated according to organic and natural principles, with Pinot Noir described as the grape that 'runs in our veins.' The house also cultivates forgotten grape varieties — Fromenteau, Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Blanc Vrai — and favors authenticity and naturalness, notably through very low dosage and extremely moderate use of sulfites, culminating in the Brut Nature Sans Soufre cuvée. The domaine is today directed by Michel Drappier and presents itself as the first French 'Carbon Neutral' House.
History
The Drappier family tree takes root in the 17th century with the birth of Rémy Drappier in 1604, who became a cloth merchant in Reims like Nicolas Ruinart. His grandson Nicolas (1669-1724) was a prosecutor under King Louis XIV. In 1808, one of the house's ancestors, François, settled in Urville and began to work a vineyard. The domaine was created in 1808 around medieval caves built in 1152 by Saint Bernard, founder of Clairvaux Abbey. The Drappier family, installed next to these caves, bought them and settled there after the Second World War; they now house rare vintages and the largest bottles. The domaine is today directed by Michel Drappier.
