Douglas Aircraft Company was an American aerospace and defense manufacturer founded in Santa Monica, California, in 1921 by Donald Wills Douglas Sr. It developed from a small aircraft producer into one of the most important American aviation companies of the twentieth century. Its work covered military aircraft, commercial transports, reconnaissance aircraft, bombers, fighters, missiles, launch vehicles, and space hardware. Douglas achieved early international recognition through the Douglas World Cruiser expedition. In 1924, four modified aircraft completed the first circumnavigation of the world by air, with two aircraft returning to Seattle after the expedition. The achievement established the company as a serious military-aircraft supplier and helped inspire its long-running association with global aviation leadership. Douglas subsequently expanded its product range, while retaining strong relationships with the U.S. Navy, Army Air Forces, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and other government customers. The company’s commercial reputation was built around the Douglas Commercial, or DC, family. The DC-2 introduced a successful twin-engine transport design in the 1930s, and the DC-3, introduced in 1936, became one of the most influential aircraft in the history of commercial aviation. Its military transport derivative, the C-47 Skytrain, served extensively during the Second World War and was known as the Dakota in British service. Douglas later produced the four-engine DC-6, the DC-7, and the jet-powered DC-8, competing directly with the emerging Boeing 707 generation. The Second World War transformed Douglas in scale. The company produced approximately 30,000 aircraft between 1942 and 1945, including the C-47, A-20 Havoc, SBD Dauntless, and A-26 Invader. Its workforce grew to approximately 160,000 employees, and the company ranked among the leading American corporations by the value of wartime production contracts. Douglas also participated in the Boeing-Vega-Douglas consortium producing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. After the war, the end of military orders caused severe contraction and the dismissal of nearly 100,000 workers. Douglas nevertheless continued investing in aviation, research, missiles, propulsion, and space systems. It conducted long-range strategic research for the U.S. Army Air Forces through Project RAND, which later became the independent RAND Corporation. During the 1950s it became a major missile and launch-vehicle contractor, working on systems such as Nike, Skybolt, and Thor, and designing the S-IVB stage used on Saturn IB and Saturn V launch vehicles. By the 1960s, Douglas was managing major commercial and defense programs simultaneously, including the DC-8, DC-9, DC-10, and A-4 Skyhawk. Production pressures, quality and cash-flow difficulties, DC-10 development costs, and the effects of the Vietnam War weakened the company’s position. Douglas merged with McDonnell Aircraft Corporation on April 28, 1967, creating McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Douglas Aircraft continued as a wholly owned subsidiary for a period, but its independent corporate identity was eventually absorbed into the merged company. McDonnell Douglas itself became part of Boeing in 1997. The Douglas name continued to appear on products and facilities for some years, but Boeing ultimately retired the Douglas Aircraft brand identity.
History
Douglas Aircraft Company originated after the dissolution of Davis-Douglas Company. Donald Wills Douglas Sr. established the Douglas Company in Santa Monica on July 22, 1921; the business was reorganized as Douglas Aircraft Company in 1928. Its early work centered on aircraft for the U.S. Navy, especially torpedo bombers and related reconnaissance designs. The company’s decisive early breakthrough came from the Douglas World Cruiser. Douglas adapted the Navy’s DT torpedo bomber for the U.S. Army Air Service’s World Flight project, while Jack Northrop contributed important fuel-system design work. Four production aircraft departed Seattle on April 6, 1924. Two completed the journey and returned to Seattle on September 28; despite losses during the expedition, the mission was celebrated as the first circumnavigation of the world by aircraft. The achievement generated further Army orders and helped establish Douglas as a leading aircraft manufacturer. During the 1920s and 1930s, Douglas broadened its engineering and manufacturing base. It moved major activity to Clover Field in Santa Monica and developed amphibious aircraft, military aircraft, airmail aircraft, and civil transports. The DC-2, introduced in 1934, demonstrated the company’s ability to compete in commercial aviation. The DC-3, introduced in 1936, became the company’s defining civil product and had a major effect on the economics and reliability of airline operations. Its military version, the C-47 Skytrain, became one of the most important Allied transports of the Second World War. Douglas was a central participant in American wartime aircraft production. It built C-47 transports, A-20 attack bombers, SBD Dauntless dive bombers, and A-26 Invader bombers, and joined the Boeing-Vega-Douglas production arrangement for B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. Between 1942 and 1945, it produced roughly 30,000 aircraft. Employment expanded to about 160,000 people, while manufacturing sites operated in California, Oklahoma, and Illinois. The end of the war produced a severe contraction as government orders ended and surplus aircraft entered the market. Douglas dismissed nearly 100,000 workers but continued pursuing advanced research. In 1946, the Army Air Forces contracted Douglas to conduct long-range research under Project RAND. The project later developed into RAND Corporation, an independent research institution. Douglas’s post-war aircraft portfolio included the DC-6, which entered service in the late 1940s, and the DC-7, its final major propeller-driven commercial airliner. The company also entered the jet era with the F3D Skyknight for the U.S. Navy and the F4D Skyray. The DC-8, introduced in 1958, made Douglas a major participant in the first generation of long-range commercial jet competition. Aerospace defense and space work became increasingly important. Douglas developed ejection seats, air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles, air-to-surface weapons, rockets, bombs, and bomb racks. In the 1950s it progressed from producing individual rockets and missiles to serving as a prime contractor for integrated systems, including the Nike program. It also worked on the Skybolt air-launched ballistic missile and the Thor ballistic missile. For NASA, Douglas designed the S-IVB stage used on Saturn IB and Saturn V launch vehicles, giving the company a significant role in the American space program. By the middle of the 1960s, Douglas faced the competing demands of large commercial programs and military production. The DC-8 and DC-9 created substantial manufacturing requirements, while the A-4 Skyhawk remained an important military program. Quality and cash-flow problems, DC-10 development costs, and shortages associated with the Vietnam War increased pressure on the business. Douglas therefore accepted a merger with McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. The transaction was completed on April 28, 1967, creating McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Douglas Aircraft continued temporarily as a wholly owned subsidiary. Donald Wills Douglas Sr. became honorary chairman, Donald Wills Douglas Jr. served as president of the subsidiary, and Douglas’s space and missile operations were placed in McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company. The Douglas identity was retained in products, facilities, and corporate symbolism, but the independent company no longer operated as it had before the merger. McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997. Boeing integrated the Douglas commercial-aircraft business into Boeing Commercial Airplanes and eventually retired the Douglas Aircraft name. The last commercial aircraft derived from Douglas’s DC-9 lineage, the Boeing 717, ended production in 2006, while the former Long Beach facility continued assembling Boeing aircraft for several more years.
