History
Dongfeng Fengdu was established as a sub-brand of Zhengzhou Nissan and introduced at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. Its creation reflected Dongfeng's plan to diversify its crossover utility vehicle portfolio and develop a more affordable passenger-vehicle offering for China. Rather than relying solely on newly developed products, the brand was organized around the reuse of existing vehicle designs, manufacturing capabilities, and tooling. Zhengzhou Nissan prepared older Nissan production tooling in China for the Fengdu program. This approach enabled the company to produce the second-generation Nissan X-Trail in rebadged form as the Dongfeng Fengdu MX6. The vehicle became the clearest expression of Fengdu's strategy: a compact five-door crossover with Nissan-related origins, sold under Dongfeng branding and aimed at value-conscious Chinese buyers. The product range subsequently expanded beyond the MX6. The MX5 was a compact five-door crossover derived from the Dongfeng Aeolus AX7, demonstrating that Fengdu could also draw on platforms from within Dongfeng's broader passenger-car operations. The range also included the MX3, another crossover model, and the Fengdu Paladin. The Paladin was a mid-size five-door SUV based on the Nissan Terra and produced by Zhengzhou Nissan, extending the brand into a larger utility-vehicle category. Fengdu's history is therefore primarily a story of platform reuse and portfolio diversification. It connected Zhengzhou Nissan's manufacturing base and Nissan-derived engineering resources with Dongfeng's China-market branding strategy. Available reference material describes the models and the brand's original purpose, but does not establish a complete chronology of launches, production endings, ownership changes, sales results, or current retail operations. The brand's present status remains uncertain on the available evidence.
