Overview
DMT-Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung mbH, commonly abbreviated DMT-LB, is a Bochum-based German organisation associated with the educational, scientific and cultural heritage of the coal-mining industry. Its principal institutional responsibilities are the support and funding of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, or German Mining Museum, and the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola (THGA), a higher-education institution with roots in Germany’s historic mining schools. Although the organisation operates in a contemporary educational and museum environment, its institutional lineage reaches back to the Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse (WBK), founded in 1864 during a reform of Prussian mining administration. The WBK consolidated earlier mining funds that had been established in Prussian territories from the eighteenth century onward. These funds were financed through compulsory contributions from private mining enterprises and supported mining authorities, infrastructure, geological work, professional training and other collective activities connected with the mining economy. The new organisation assumed responsibility for the Bochum mining school, established in 1816 and later developed into today’s THGA. Over time, its educational remit extended to additional mining colleges in places including Bergkamen, Duisburg and Recklinghausen. WBK also became an important patron of applied science and technical infrastructure. Its activities included support for geomagnetic observation, mine-safety testing, laboratories, firedamp experimentation, inspection of hoisting equipment and mining lamps, and work related to occupational health and safety. It helped finance the development of Bergmannsheil University Hospitals in Bochum and supported the expansion of canal links serving the Ruhr’s industrial economy. Its scientific collections subsequently contributed to the creation of the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum in 1930. The post-war revival of German coal mining was followed by the coal crisis, falling sales and widespread mine closures. The formation of Ruhrkohle AG in 1968 was part of the industry’s response to this structural decline. At the same time, the coal sector increasingly sought to consolidate its numerous technical, scientific and educational bodies. On 1 January 1990, Deutsche Montan Technologie für Rohstoff, Energie, Umwelt e. V., generally known as DMT, was established. It brought together WBK with the Steinkohlen-Bergbau-Verein, Bergbau-Forschung GmbH in Essen and Versuchsgrubengesellschaft mbH at the former Tremonia colliery site in Dortmund. DMT subsequently operated two principal companies: DMT-Gesellschaft für Forschung und Prüfung mbH, whose successor activities later became part of the TÜV NORD Group, and DMT-Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung mbH. DMT-LB retained the educational and cultural functions linked to the mining tradition. In addition to THGA and the German Mining Museum, it formerly operated four vocational colleges. Those colleges, together with retraining and qualification activities, were transferred during later restructuring to RAG-associated education companies, which also became part of the TÜV NORD Group. DMT-LB is not a consumer-facing product brand or a financial-services company. It is best understood as an institutional education and heritage organisation. Its role is to maintain and finance specialist teaching, preserve and interpret mining knowledge, and connect the industrial history of the Ruhr region with contemporary higher education and public culture. The organisation’s sole shareholder is DMT, which is supported by the RAG-Stiftung, RAG AG and affiliated companies. A cited 2017 profile described approximately 300 employees, including around 40 teaching staff at THGA, and reported turnover of €36.1 million, with approximately 53 percent attributed to institutional grants.
History
DMT-Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung is the modern successor to a long institutional tradition created to organise collective services for German mining. Before its formal establishment, mining authorities and private mining companies in Prussian territories supported local funds that financed administrative, infrastructural, scientific and educational activities. The Westfälische Berggewerkschaftskasse was founded in 1864 to bring several of these arrangements together in the context of Prussian mining-law reform. One of WBK’s most enduring responsibilities was the support of the Bochum mining school, founded in 1816. This institution became a central part of the region’s technical training system and ultimately developed into the Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola. WBK’s work expanded beyond education. It supported geological and geomagnetic observation, laboratories, mine-safety experiments, inspection facilities and occupational-safety activities. It also participated in projects connected with hospitals, transport infrastructure and technical services for the mining sector. The organisation’s scientific collections were an important foundation for the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, established in 1930. After the Second World War, the German coal industry briefly experienced renewed growth, but the subsequent coal crisis caused sharp declines in sales and extensive mine closures. Ruhrkohle AG was created in 1968 to help stabilise the industry. The contraction of coal mining also encouraged the consolidation of technical, scientific and educational institutions that had previously been maintained by separate industry bodies. This consolidation produced Deutsche Montan Technologie für Rohstoff, Energie, Umwelt e. V. on 1 January 1990. The new association incorporated WBK, Steinkohlen-Bergbau-Verein, Bergbau-Forschung GmbH and Versuchsgrubengesellschaft mbH. Two companies were established under its umbrella: one for research and testing and another for education and cultural activities. The latter became DMT-Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung mbH. DMT-LB continued to support the German Mining Museum and THGA. It also operated four vocational colleges until the end of the 2000s, when those colleges and associated retraining and qualification activities were transferred to RAG education companies as part of restructuring and ownership changes. The research and testing company followed a separate path and was later integrated into the TÜV NORD Group. In its current form, DMT-LB is owned solely by Deutsche Montan Technologie e. V. Its institutional role reflects the transition of the German mining economy from an operating industrial sector to a subject of higher education, technical memory and public heritage. Through THGA, it supports specialised education; through the German Mining Museum, it supports preservation, research and public interpretation of mining history. A 2017 account described an organisation of about 300 employees, including approximately 40 teaching staff at THGA, and reported €36.1 million in turnover, around 53 percent of which came from institutional grants.
