Overview
Disney Entertainment Television is a division of the Disney Entertainment business segment of The Walt Disney Company. It oversees a broad portfolio of Disney-owned television content, networks, production studios, news operations, and related entertainment assets. Its principal businesses include the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), ABC News, Disney-branded kids and family television operations, Freeform, FX Networks, National Geographic, Disney Television Studios, and Hulu's original scripted-content operations. The division combines broadcast television, cable programming, television production, unscripted development, streaming originals, and associated content businesses. The division's modern corporate history began with Disney's 1996 acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC. After the transaction, many former Capital Cities/ABC and Disney television assets were organized under ABC Group. The transaction brought the ABC television network, ABC-owned stations, cable interests, international broadcasting assets, publishing properties, and significant stakes in businesses such as ESPN and A&E Networks into Disney's corporate structure. The post-merger organization was repeatedly adjusted as Disney separated, consolidated, sold, or reassigned television, radio, publishing, international, and interactive assets. In the late 1990s, Disney transferred several television operations into the Disney–ABC Television Group, combining ABC-related assets with Disney's television businesses. The group subsequently integrated ABC's entertainment activities, Disney Channels, ABC Studios, ABC Television Network operations, and domestic distribution functions. It also participated in the development of digital distribution, new television channels, online video, and streaming partnerships. ABC's investment in Hulu in 2009 helped establish Disney as an important participant in the emerging online-video market. The division changed substantially after Disney acquired most of 21st Century Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. The acquisition added 20th Century Fox Television, FX Networks and FX Productions, Fox 21 Television Studios, and National Geographic's global networks to Disney's television portfolio. Disney reorganized its production studios, removed the Fox name from several acquired businesses, and placed Hulu's scripted-originals team within the television organization after taking full operational control of Hulu. The division was known as Walt Disney Television after the Fox transaction, then Disney General Entertainment Content from 2020, and Disney Entertainment Television from 2023. These changes reflected broader company reorganizations rather than the creation of an entirely new content portfolio. Disney Television Studios consolidated and renamed several production units: 20th Century Fox Television became 20th Television, Fox 21 Television Studios became Touchstone Television, and ABC Studios combined with ABC Signature to form ABC Signature. In 2024, ABC Signature was folded into 20th Television. Disney Entertainment Television operates within a larger Disney strategy in which traditional television networks, owned production studios, streaming services, and direct-to-consumer distribution are managed as complementary parts of one content ecosystem. The division's television brands serve general entertainment, news, children and family, factual programming, scripted drama and comedy, live and unscripted formats, and premium cable audiences. Its business model includes advertising-supported broadcasting and cable, affiliate and licensing revenue, program sales, production, and the creation of content for Disney's streaming platforms and other distributors.
History
Disney Entertainment Television traces its corporate lineage to the Walt Disney Company's 1996 acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC. The transaction brought the ABC broadcast network, ABC-owned stations, ABC cable and international interests, ABC News-related operations, publishing businesses, radio assets, and major stakes in ESPN and A&E Networks into Disney. The combined assets were initially organized under ABC Group, while Disney's pre-existing television activities were progressively reassigned and integrated. Before and during the merger, Disney reorganized Walt Disney Television and Telecommunications. Its businesses included The Disney Channel, Walt Disney Television, Touchstone Television, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Disney Interactive, and television-station assets. Following the merger, Disney transferred international television operations and other units between Disney and ABC reporting structures. Several non-core publishing, radio, station, and international holdings were later sold, spun off, or placed under different corporate arrangements. In the late 1990s, Disney moved television units into the Disney–ABC Television Group and combined ABC's primetime activities with Disney's television operations. The group developed broadcast, cable, production, syndication, and digital initiatives. It created advertising and promotional structures spanning ABC and Disney kids programming, launched or supported new digital television services, and pursued online distribution. The ABC1 service in the United Kingdom represented an attempt to extend the ABC name into an international television market, although it was later closed. The 2000s brought additional consolidation. Touchstone Television became ABC Television Studio in 2007 as Disney reduced the prominence of secondary corporate brands. Disney also separated ABC Radio Networks from its television group, while retaining other radio holdings and licensing arrangements. In 2009, ABC Enterprises took a stake in Hulu in exchange for online distribution rights and advertising credits, reflecting the growing importance of internet video. The group also participated in the launch of the Live Well Network and in the creation of Fusion with Univision Communications. Disney continued to reshape its television portfolio through the 2010s. ABC Family Worldwide took on additional operational responsibility for Soapnet before that service was gradually replaced by Disney Junior. ABC Family was renamed Freeform in 2016. Disney also sold its interest in Fusion to Univision and adjusted the management structure of the television group. At the same time, Disney's interests in A+E Networks and Vice Media illustrated the broader company's willingness to use joint ventures and minority investments to expand its television reach. The largest transformation came from Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox entertainment assets, completed in 2019. The deal added 20th Century Fox Television, FX Networks, FX Productions, Fox 21 Television Studios, and National Geographic's global network interests. Disney reorganized these businesses with its existing ABC and Disney operations. It created shared functions, including a common casting organization for Disney Television Studios and FX Entertainment, and placed Hulu's scripted-originals team within the television structure after Disney obtained full control of Hulu. In 2020, Disney renamed the acquired Fox television studios and consolidated several production operations. 20th Century Fox Television became 20th Television, Fox 21 Television Studios became Touchstone Television, and ABC Studios merged with ABC Signature to form ABC Signature. The former syndication arm known as 20th Television was also folded into Disney's domestic television distribution organization. The division was then renamed Disney General Entertainment Content. In 2021, Disney created Walt Disney Television Alternative to coordinate the development of unscripted programming, specials, and other alternative formats. In 2023, the division was renamed Disney Entertainment Television. In 2024, ABC Signature was folded into 20th Television. By the mid-2020s, the division's portfolio included ABC, ABC News, Disney kids and family operations, Disney Television Studios, Freeform, FX Networks, Hulu original-content teams, and National Geographic. Its role is to develop, produce, commission, distribute, and manage television content across linear networks and streaming-oriented businesses within Disney Entertainment.
