Overview
DiaSorin is an Italian multinational biotechnology and in-vitro diagnostics company headquartered in Saluggia, Piedmont. Its principal business is the development, manufacture and marketing of diagnostic reagent kits and the automated platforms used to process them. The company serves hospital and private laboratories, healthcare professionals and research users across international markets. Its portfolio is concentrated in specialized testing rather than broad routine laboratory diagnostics, with applications spanning infectious diseases, endocrinology, bone and mineral metabolism, hypertension, oncology, onco-hematology, gastrointestinal infections, autoimmunity, and cardiac and neurological markers. The company's origins trace to Sorin Biomedica, founded in 1968 through an initiative associated with Fiat and Montecatini and the Società Ricerche Impianti Nucleari. The in-vitro diagnostics activities later developed under the DiaSorin name. In 1997 Sorin Biomedica was acquired by American Standard, where it became part of a medical systems organization. DiaSorin became an independent Italian group in 2000 following a management buyout led by Carlo Rosa and Gustavo Denegri. The name combines the diagnostic reference in “Dia” with the Sorin heritage. A major turning point came in 2002, when DiaSorin acquired BYC Sangtec and rights connected with the LIAISON platform. This established the foundation for the company's automated specialty immunodiagnostics business. DiaSorin progressively converted earlier enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay products to automated chemiluminescence immunoassay formats and expanded its commercial presence through subsidiaries and distributors. Its LIAISON platform family became the principal vehicle for a broad menu of proprietary assays, while molecular diagnostics added extraction, amplification and detection capabilities for infectious-disease and selected hematological applications. DiaSorin listed its shares on the Italian Stock Exchange in 2007 and later became a constituent of the FTSE MIB index. During the following decade, the company expanded through acquisitions and partnerships. These included the Focus Diagnostics molecular-diagnostics business, the Siemens Healthineers ELISA business, and collaborations with Beckman Coulter, QIAGEN, Meridian Bioscience, TTP and MeMed. The partnerships extended distribution, regulatory access and technology development in areas such as hepatitis, HIV, latent tuberculosis, Helicobacter pylori and host-response testing. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated DiaSorin's development and regulatory activity. In 2020 it introduced antibody, antigen and molecular tests for SARS-CoV-2, including assays for the LIAISON and Simplexa platforms. Several products received emergency or national regulatory authorizations, including a U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorization for its SARS-CoV-2 serology products. The company also expanded respiratory testing through combined influenza and respiratory syncytial virus assays, and added specimen types and variant-related testing capabilities. In 2021 DiaSorin entered the life-science business more substantially through the acquisition of Luminex Corporation. The transaction added Luminex's xMAP multi-analyte technology, flow-cytometry activities and production sites in the United States and Canada. DiaSorin also introduced the LIAISON IQ point-of-care platform, developed with Lumos Diagnostics, and launched additional SARS-CoV-2 and Lyme-disease solutions in markets accepting the CE Mark. Today, DiaSorin's business model centers on proprietary reagents that operate on dedicated or compatible automated systems. Its manufacturing and development footprint includes facilities in Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Direct commercial operations cover major markets including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China, Australia and Israel, while a network of independent distributors sup…
History
DiaSorin's historical roots lie in Sorin Biomedica, established in 1968 near the Italian nuclear-research and medical-technology activities associated with Sorin. The company developed diagnostic and medical businesses over subsequent decades. In 1997 American Standard acquired Sorin Biomedica and Immunonuclear Corporation, bringing the businesses into its Medical System Group. The DiaSorin identity emerged as the in-vitro diagnostics activities were reorganized. In 2000 the business became independent through a management buyout led by Carlo Rosa and Gustavo Denegri. The independent group concentrated on diagnostic reagents and laboratory systems, with an emphasis on specialty immunodiagnostics. The 2002 acquisition of BYC Sangtec and rights related to the LIAISON platform was especially important because it gave DiaSorin a scalable automated platform around which it could build a proprietary assay menu. The company also expanded into Mexico, Israel and China and migrated many ELISA products toward automated CLIA formats. DiaSorin's subsequent growth combined internal product development, geographic expansion, acquisitions and commercial alliances. Its immunodiagnostic activities developed across infectious diseases, endocrinology, bone and mineral disorders, oncology, autoimmunity, gastrointestinal infections and cardiovascular or neurological markers. Its molecular-diagnostics business focused particularly on infectious diseases and selected leukemia-related applications, using different sample types including blood, cerebrospinal fluid and swabs. The company entered the Italian public market in 2007. During the mid-2010s it broadened molecular diagnostics through the acquisition of the Focus Diagnostics business unit, added the Siemens Healthineers ELISA business, and formed partnerships with Beckman Coulter and QIAGEN. These relationships supported regulatory submissions and commercial access for hepatitis, HIV and tuberculosis testing. Additional cooperation with Meridian addressed Helicobacter pylori testing, while agreements with TTP and MeMed extended the company's interest into automated point-of-care molecular testing and host-response diagnostics. The COVID-19 period was a major product and regulatory milestone. DiaSorin developed SARS-CoV-2 antibody assays for epidemiological and clinical use, followed by antigen and molecular products. During 2020 and 2021, the company obtained or pursued authorizations in the United States, Canada, Brazil and CE Mark markets. It also expanded respiratory differentiation with a Simplexa assay for influenza A, influenza B and respiratory syncytial virus, and developed assays addressing saliva specimens and SARS-CoV-2 variants. In July 2021 DiaSorin completed its acquisition of Luminex Corporation. This added multi-analyte xMAP technology, flow cytometry and a broader life-science platform to the group's traditional diagnostics operations. In the same period, DiaSorin introduced the LIAISON IQ point-of-care system with Lumos Diagnostics and continued developing infectious-disease products, including Lyme and SARS-CoV-2 tests. The modern group operates manufacturing and commercial facilities across Europe and North America. Its principal technology pillars are automated CLIA and ELISA immunodiagnostics, molecular testing covering extraction, amplification and detection, point-of-care diagnostics, and Luminex multi-analyte and flow-cytometry technologies. DiaSorin remains a publicly traded Italian diagnostics company whose strategy is oriented toward specialized laboratory medicine, proprietary assays and international distribution.
