Overview
Desnoes & Geddes Limited, commonly known as D&G, is a Jamaican brewer and beverage producer whose best-known product is Red Stripe lager. The company was established in Kingston in 1918 when Eugene Peter Desnoes and Thomas Hargreaves Geddes combined their two retail businesses. Its early activities included producing soft drinks and distributing imported alcoholic beverages, giving the business a broader beverage and distribution base before it developed into a major Jamaican brewer. D&G's history is closely associated with the development of Jamaica's modern beverage industry. The company later opened the Surrey Brewery in Kingston, creating a domestic production base for beer and other drinks. Red Stripe became its signature export and the product most strongly associated with the company outside Jamaica. The beer is widely identified with Jamaican popular culture and has served as one of the country's recognizable consumer exports. The company's portfolio has extended beyond its flagship lager. Its beer and malt-beverage range has included Red Stripe Light, Dragon Stout, Malta, Guinness, Heineken, and Smirnoff Ice. Dragon Stout, first introduced in 1920 and relaunched in 1961, is a dark stout made with European, caramel, and roasted malts as well as dark brown sugar. At 7.5% alcohol by volume, it occupies a substantially different position from the lighter Red Stripe lager. Red Stripe and Dragon Stout have both been included in the reference book 1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die. D&G has also operated in non-alcoholic beverages. Old Jamaica Ginger Beer became an important export product, while Malta served the local market as a non-alcoholic malt beverage. The company formerly produced soft drinks including Ting, a well-known Jamaican grapefruit drink, but sold its soft-drink division to PepsiCo in 1999. In the same year, it sold its spirits and wine division to J. Wray and Nephew Ltd., narrowing the company's activities around brewing and beverage production. Ownership has changed significantly over time. Diageo, the international beverage group associated with Guinness and Smirnoff, held a controlling interest from 1993 until autumn 2015. In October 2015, Heineken acquired Diageo's stake, bringing its holding in D&G to 73.3%. Heineken said it would seek to acquire the remaining shares. D&G therefore combines a strongly Jamaican operating and cultural identity with the resources and international distribution relationships of a global brewing group. Its current brand significance rests principally on Red Stripe, supported by a wider portfolio of beers, malt drinks, and selected beverage exports.
History
Desnoes & Geddes was formed in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1918 by Eugene Peter Desnoes and Thomas Hargreaves Geddes. The founders combined their two shops into a single business. At the beginning, the company produced soft drinks and distributed imported alcoholic beverages rather than operating solely as a brewer. This combination of manufacturing and distribution gave D&G an early presence across several parts of the beverage trade. The business later established the Surrey Brewery in Kingston. Brewing became central to the company's identity, and D&G developed products for the Jamaican market as well as beverages with export potential. Red Stripe eventually became the company's defining lager. Its Jamaican origin, distinctive branding, and international distribution made it one of the country's most recognizable consumer products and a prominent Jamaican export. D&G's brewing portfolio also included Dragon Stout, a darker and stronger beer first introduced in 1920 and relaunched in 1961. The stout uses European, caramel, and roasted malts together with dark brown sugar and has an alcohol content of 7.5%. Alongside Red Stripe, Dragon Stout has received international attention through its inclusion in the beer reference book 1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die. The company maintained a broader beverage portfolio than beer alone. It produced malt beverages, including the non-alcoholic Malta, and handled or brewed products associated with Guinness, Heineken, and Smirnoff Ice for the local market. Old Jamaica Ginger Beer became an export product. D&G also participated in soft drinks, including Ting, but sold that division to PepsiCo in 1999. During the same year, it sold its spirits and wine division to J. Wray and Nephew Ltd. These transactions reduced the breadth of D&G's directly owned beverage activities and placed greater emphasis on brewing and related drinks. Ownership shifted from Jamaican control toward international brewing-group ownership. Diageo held a controlling stake from 1993 through autumn 2015. In October 2015, Heineken purchased Diageo's interest, taking its stake to 73.3%. Heineken also stated that it would launch a full bid for the shares it did not own. Through this transition, D&G retained its Jamaican corporate and cultural identity while becoming part of Heineken's international brewing network. The company's historical importance is therefore dual: it is both a long-established Jamaican beverage producer and the corporate home of Red Stripe, a brand with recognition well beyond Jamaica.
