Overview
Demiplane is a United States-based digital tabletop role-playing game company founded in 2019 by Peter Romenesko and Travis Frederick. Its platform is designed to support both remote and in-person play through browser-based game tools, community services, licensed digital game content, and character-management software. The company launched its platform in 2020 and opened early access to its Nexus product family in 2021. The company's central offering is Nexus, a collection of digital toolsets built around licensed tabletop role-playing games. A Nexus product can include an online reader for rulebooks and adventures, searchable and cross-linked rules compendiums, character builders, digital character sheets, and access to purchased options during play. Unlike a simple electronic-book store, the system is intended to make rules content usable within associated game-management tools. Demiplane has developed Nexus products with publishers and rights holders including Paizo, Paradox Interactive, Free League Publishing, Magpie Games, and other tabletop publishers. Supported properties have included Pathfinder Second Edition, Vampire: The Masquerade, the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game, ALIEN: The Roleplaying Game, Mutant: Year Zero, Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, Hunter: The Reckoning, and Candela Obscura, among others. Demiplane also operates free community-oriented services. Its matchmaking system allows players and Game Masters to specify factors such as preferred game, group size, play style, and themes before being matched with potential groups. Ratings and discussion tools help users assess prospective players and Game Masters. Its hosting tools provide text and video communication, breakout rooms, dice rolling, shared searchable journals, and task or inventory tracking. The platform also includes safety-oriented controls, including a mechanism that allows a player to discreetly alert a Game Master when a session is approaching a previously agreed boundary. Game Masters can offer paid sessions and receive tips through the service, with Demiplane facilitating the associated payments. The company has positioned itself as complementary to virtual tabletops rather than as a direct replacement for them. In its earlier strategy, Demiplane described the service as compatible with virtual tabletop platforms such as Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds, with the emphasis placed on content, character preparation, matchmaking, and campaign organization. The distinction became less clear after Roll20 acquired Demiplane in June 2024. The acquisition brought Demiplane's character-sheet and licensed-content ecosystem into the Roll20 corporate group, while the companies stated that users would not experience immediate disruption and that they intended to improve interoperability. Roll20 also said that it did not plan to remove the 5E Nexus offering. Beyond software, Demiplane has used Twitch and YouTube programming to build an audience around tabletop play. Its productions have included actual-play series such as Heroes of the Planes, Strixhaven CHAOS, Children of Éarte, and Extinction Race, as well as the interview program Demiplanar. These productions connect the company with performers, publishers, Game Masters, and tabletop media communities. Following the Roll20 transaction, Adam Bradford, an early senior executive and founder of D&D Beyond, departed Demiplane and later joined SmiteWorks, the operator of Fantasy Grounds. Demiplane's present identity is therefore that of a Roll20-owned digital companion and licensed-content platform for tabletop role-playing games.
History
Demiplane was founded in 2019 by Peter Romenesko and Travis Frederick, who had grown up playing tabletop games in the Lake Geneva area before reconnecting to create a technology company for the hobby. The startup received support from TitletownTech and used space associated with that organization's startup incubator. Its platform officially launched in 2020, with the initial product aimed at helping tabletop role-playing groups find one another, organize sessions, and play together online or in person. Demiplane's early service combined matchmaking and hosted gaming. Players and Game Masters could search for groups based on game preferences, group size, play style, and themes. Once a group was formed, users could communicate through text and video, roll dice, maintain shared journals, track tasks and inventory, and use breakout rooms for private Game Master conversations. The platform also incorporated safety features intended to help groups enforce session boundaries. Demiplane allowed Game Masters to charge for sessions and accept tips, while processing the payments through the platform. Its founders initially described the service as complementary to virtual tabletops rather than a conventional VTT competitor. The company's most important expansion began with Nexus, a family of digital toolsets for licensed tabletop games. In 2021, Demiplane announced partnerships involving Paizo's Pathfinder games, Paradox Interactive's World of Darkness properties, and Free League Publishing's games. Pathfinder Primer, an early version of Pathfinder Nexus, was made available during this period. Nexus was intended to perform for these games a role comparable to a digital rules and character ecosystem: customers could read digitally formatted rulebooks, search and cross-reference compendium entries, build characters, and use purchased rules options in associated sheets and play tools. Adam Bradford joined Demiplane as chief development officer in March 2021. His experience as the founder of D&D Beyond helped reinforce Demiplane's focus on digital rules access and character management. During 2022, the company expanded its licensed portfolio. It announced the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game NEXUS, launched early access for Vampire: The Masquerade Nexus, and announced planned support for Hunter: The Reckoning. Vampire's offering was notable for including a digital and physical product bundle. Magpie Games also announced early access for Avatar Legends Nexus in October 2022. In 2023, Demiplane announced 5E Nexus, aimed initially at third-party publishers using the D&D 5.1 System Reference Document rather than official Dungeons & Dragons products from Wizards of the Coast. Early preparation tools included group creation and matchmaking, while the company planned to release the compendium, digital reader, and character builder in stages. Early access began in September 2023 with third-party material from publishers including Darrington Press, Kobold Press, and Ghostfire Games. Digital character tools for Vampire: The Masquerade launched officially in October of that year. Demiplane also continued expanding its Free League support, including the ALIEN: The Roleplaying Game Nexus. Content development was accompanied by an audience-building media strategy. Demiplane produced or distributed actual-play and discussion programs on Twitch and YouTube. Heroes of the Planes presented a multi-episode Fifth Edition campaign, while Demiplanar interviewed figures from the tabletop industry. Strixhaven CHAOS was a limited actual-play series, and Extinction Race promoted the Mutant: Year Zero ruleset alongside its Nexus launch. Children of Éarte, created and run by Deborah Ann Woll, became an ongoing actual-play production and received nominations at the 2023 New Jersey Web Festival. In June 2024, Roll20 announced that it had acquired Demiplane. Roll20 presented the transaction as a way to combine its virtual tabletop with Demiplane's character-sheet and licensed-content systems, with the broader goal of reducing friction between character creation and joining a game. The companies said the acquisition would not immediately alter either platform and that Roll20 did not plan to make changes to 5E Nexus. Roll20 and Demiplane subsequently supported cross-platform access for certain licensed products where publishers had granted permission. The transaction also resulted in the departure of Adam Bradford, who later joined SmiteWorks, the company behind Fantasy Grounds. Demiplane therefore entered its current phase as a Roll20-owned tabletop software and digital publishing brand.
