Controversy over the Icelandic Health Sector Database
The proposed national database would have combined health records for research and commercial purposes under an opt-out framework. Privacy advocates and bioethicists challenged the project’s consent model, governance and commercialization of public-health information. Although deCODE received authorization to create the database, it was never built.
