Overview
CT Corp is an Indonesian diversified conglomerate founded by entrepreneur Chairul Tanjung in 1987. Formerly known as Para Group, it developed from a small children's-shoe export operation into a broad consumer-oriented business group with substantial activities in financial services, media and entertainment, retail, lifestyle, hospitality, property, and selected infrastructure and natural-resources interests. Its principal operating structure is organized around three broad holding areas: Mega Corp, which contains financial-services businesses; Trans Corp, which houses media, retail, entertainment, food and beverage, fashion, and property operations; and CT Global Resources, associated with investments outside the core consumer portfolio. Financial services became a central pillar of the group during the 1990s. In 1996, CT Corp acquired Mega Bank and renamed it Bank Mega. The group subsequently took over Bank Tugu, which was reconstituted as Bank Mega Syariah. Bank Mega became a publicly traded company on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2001 and has been described as an important cash-flow generator for the wider group. The financial-services portfolio also includes insurance, securities, asset management, consumer finance, automotive finance, and investment businesses. In 2022, the group launched Allo Bank, a digital banking operation listed in Indonesia under the ticker BBHI. CT Corp's media business grew from Trans TV, its earliest free-to-air television channel. Trans TV's audience and advertising performance improved substantially in the early 2000s, helping establish the group's presence in Indonesian broadcasting. In 2006, Trans Corp reached an agreement to acquire part of the TV7 business associated with Kompas Gramedia Group. TV7 was subsequently rebranded as Trans7 in December of that year. The media portfolio later expanded to include news and digital properties such as Detik.com and Detik Network, as well as CNN Indonesia, CNNIndonesia.com, CNBC Indonesia, CNBCIndonesia.com, Transvision, and related production and event businesses. Retail became another major area of expansion after CT Corp acquired a minority stake in Carrefour's Indonesian operations in 2010 and completed the acquisition in January 2013. The stores were subsequently operated under the Transmart Carrefour or Transmart names. The group also operates or has operated Metro department stores, international fashion and luxury labels, and food-and-beverage franchises including The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Wendy's, and Baskin-Robbins. These businesses reflect CT Corp's emphasis on consumer-facing brands and nationwide distribution. The group also owns and develops hotels, resorts, shopping and mixed-use properties, theme parks, indoor entertainment venues, and snow parks. Trans Studio, Trans Snow World, Kid City, Trans Studio malls, and Trans-branded hotels and resorts form part of this lifestyle and property platform, with projects in cities including Bandung, Makassar, Cibubur, Surabaya, Bali, Bekasi, Bintaro, and other Indonesian locations. CT Corp has also held interests and partnerships in aviation, healthcare, insurance, property development, and infrastructure. On 1 December 2011, Para Group formally changed its name to CT Corp. The rebranding was presented as a transformation after roughly three decades of development and introduced a new corporate identity. The group remains controlled by Chairul Tanjung and his family, while strategic and financial investors have participated in selected entities. Mitsui & Co. made a major investment in CT Corp in 2021, and investors including GIC Private Limited and the International Finance Corporation have held direct or indirect positions in subsidiaries. CT Corp's present identity is therefore that of a privately controlled Indonesian conglomerate whose businesses combine financial infrastructure with mass-media, retail, hospitality, entertainment, and property assets.
History
CT Corp began in 1987 when Chairul Tanjung established a small export business specializing in children's shoes. The enterprise started with capital obtained from Bank Exim and later expanded beyond trading into financial services, media, retail, entertainment, and property. Its early development established the entrepreneurial and consumer-oriented character that continued to shape the group. The financial-services platform became especially important in the 1990s. In 1996, the group acquired Mega Bank and changed its name to Bank Mega. It later took over Bank Tugu and renamed the institution Bank Mega Syariah, thereby adding an Islamic-banking arm. Bank Mega listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange on 28 March 2001. The bank subsequently became a major source of cash flow for CT Corp. The group broadened its financial portfolio through insurance companies, securities and asset-management firms, consumer-finance companies, automotive-finance businesses, and other investment operations. Allo Bank, a digital bank associated with the group, was launched on 20 May 2022 and is publicly traded in Indonesia. Media was developed through Trans TV, CT Corp's first and oldest free-to-air television channel. Its commercial performance accelerated in the early 2000s. A Nielsen Media Research survey cited in the group's history placed Trans TV fifth among ten television stations by advertising volume in the first quarter of 2002, with reported advertising value of Rp149.2 billion. By the end of 2005, the channel had risen to second place in the cited ranking. This success supported further media expansion. In June 2006, Trans Corp signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire part of TV7 from Kompas Gramedia Group. The transaction led to the rebranding of TV7 as Trans7 on 15 December 2006. CT Corp subsequently expanded from conventional broadcasting into digital news, business media, television production, events, and pay television. Its media-related portfolio came to include Detik.com and the wider Detik Network, CNN Indonesia, CNBC Indonesia, Transvision, and associated websites and production companies. Retail became a major growth platform in the next decade. CT Corp acquired 40% of Carrefour's Indonesian operations in 2010 and completed the purchase of the remaining operation in January 2013. The stores were subsequently branded Transmart Carrefour or Transmart. Alongside this supermarket and hypermarket business, the group developed a retail portfolio that included Metro department stores, international fashion and luxury labels, and food-and-beverage brands such as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Wendy's, and Baskin-Robbins. On 1 December 2011, the group announced the transformation of Para Group into CT Corp. The name change was accompanied by a revised logo and a structure based on three sub-holding companies: Mega Corp, Trans Corp, and CT Global Resources. These entities covered financial services, media, retail, lifestyle, entertainment, and resource-related activities. The rebranding marked an effort to give the increasingly diverse group a unified corporate identity. Property and entertainment became closely linked to the group's retail and media businesses. CT Corp developed Trans Studio theme parks, Trans Snow World indoor snow attractions, Kid City family-entertainment centers, shopping malls, hotels, and resorts. Projects and venues were established in cities including Bandung, Makassar, Cibubur, Surabaya, Bali, Bekasi, Bintaro, and other Indonesian markets. The group also participated in aviation, healthcare, insurance, property, and infrastructure ventures, including partnerships and investments beyond Indonesia. CT Corp has maintained relationships with other Indonesian business groups. Historical activities described in reference material include cooperation with Salim Group on projects in Batam and Singapore, partnership with Sinar Mas Group in Mega Life insurance, and property development ventures with other partners. The group has also been associated with investments in Singapore healthcare and Batam property. In 2021, Mitsui & Co. invested in CT Corp, while GIC Private Limited and the International Finance Corporation were identified as investors with direct or indirect interests in subsidiaries. Through this combination of family control, strategic partnerships, and listed subsidiaries, CT Corp developed into one of Indonesia's largest diversified business groups.
