History
Cookshack was founded by Gene Ellis, who was passionate about barbecue and wanted an easier way to smoke foods in his backyard. He experimented with charcoal grills, a stone fireplace, and welded metal boxes, which became the initial design concept for the SmartSmokers. His wife Judy helped develop the line of sauces and rubs. Word of Gene's invention spread, and other backyard cooks requested smaller versions of the commercial units. More than 50 years later, the company remains in the hands of Gene's children, with current CEO Stuart Powell. In 1997, Eddy developed what is today called the FEC100, a top-quality professional competition smoker.
