Overview
Ciesse Piumini is an Italian sportswear brand specializing in down jackets, technical outerwear, and clothing for skiing, mountaineering, and other cold-weather activities. The brand was established in 1976 in Borgo a Buggiano, Tuscany, by Silvano Cinelli, owner of Ligron S.p.A. Its name was derived from the initials of Cinelli's name. The brand grew out of Cinelli Piume, a business founded by Cinelli in 1964 to process natural down and manufacture pillows and quilts. The transition from bedding-related products to technical apparel gave Ciesse Piumini a foundation in down insulation while positioning it within Italy's developing outdoor and winter-sports clothing sector. Ciesse initially concentrated on functional equipment for skiing and mountaineering. Its early technical orientation was strengthened by its involvement in the first Italian expedition to Antarctica, organized by the National Committee for Nuclear Energy, now ENEA, for which Ciesse supplied technical clothing and equipment. The brand later expanded beyond specialist expedition and ski garments into fashionable down jackets and practical outerwear suitable for urban use. This combination of performance and everyday styling became an important part of its identity. During its expansion, the business acquired additional production capacity. A second plant was purchased in Ponte Buggianese, and a further complex in Altopascio was added. In 1984, some offices and part of production were transferred to Altopascio. Ciesse was also identified as the first Italian company to produce sports down jackets and one of the early Italian users of Gore-Tex, a technically advanced waterproof and breathable material at the time. These developments helped distinguish the brand from conventional fashion outerwear and tied it to the technical innovation associated with alpine and winter sports. The company entered a difficult period from 1988 onward. Two unusually mild winters reduced demand for winter clothing and contributed to a sharp decline in Ligron's turnover. On 17 March 1989, a fire destroyed an entire department of the Borgo a Buggiano factory. Around the same period, Italpiumini, another company owned by Cinelli, closed. The combined commercial and operational difficulties weakened the business, and in 1993 Cinelli sold the Ciesse Piumini brand to Fila because the company was struggling to compete. Ciesse subsequently passed through several ownership structures connected with Fila and investment funds. In 2003, Fila Holding divested Ciesse along with Fila Nederland, Fila Sport, and Fila USA to Sport Brands International, which was controlled by the United States private-equity fund Cerberus. Cerberus sold the brand in 2006 to GEM, or Global Emerging Markets. GEM attempted to bring the company to the stock market, but the proposed listing did not succeed. After several years of limited market visibility, Fremil International S.p.A., an Italian company that had already distributed the brand's snow clothing, acquired Ciesse from GEM in 2010 and began a relaunch. The revival was presented through a collection at Pitti in 2011 and relied on cooperation with the existing sales network to plan a commercially appropriate range. This strategy sought to reconnect the brand with its historical winter-sports credentials while restoring its presence in the broader outerwear market. In November 2019, Mittel, a merchant-banking and financial company, acquired 90 percent of Sport Fashion Service, the company owning the Ciesse Piumini brand. The reported transaction value was 15 million euros. Ciesse therefore remains an Italian-rooted technical outerwear name whose history combines down expertise, alpine and expedition clothing, fashion-oriented winter jackets, industrial setbacks, repeated ownership changes, and attempts at commercial relaunch.
History
Ciesse Piumini developed from Silvano Cinelli's earlier down-processing business. Cinelli founded Cinelli Piume in 1964, initially focusing on natural down, pillows, and quilts. In 1976, the initials of his name were used to create the Ciesse Piumini brand in Borgo a Buggiano. The new label redirected the company's material expertise toward technical sportswear for skiing and mountaineering. The brand established an early reputation through demanding outdoor applications. It supplied technical equipment for the first Italian Antarctic expedition organized by the National Committee for Nuclear Energy, now ENEA. Ciesse then broadened its offer to include both technical sportswear and more fashionable down jackets that could be worn in cities. Its expansion included a second production plant in Ponte Buggianese and a further complex in Altopascio. In 1984, offices and part of production were moved to Altopascio. Ciesse's technical identity was reinforced by its role as an early Italian producer of sports down jackets and by its adoption of Gore-Tex for technical garments. The brand's growth was interrupted from 1988, when two mild winters reduced demand and Ligron experienced a major fall in turnover. A factory fire on 17 March 1989 destroyed an entire department at Borgo a Buggiano. Italpiumini, another Cinelli-owned company, also closed during this difficult period. Unable to compete effectively, Cinelli sold the Ciesse Piumini brand to Fila in 1993. Fila Holding later divested Ciesse in 2003 as part of a broader transfer involving Fila Nederland, Fila Sport, and Fila USA to Sport Brands International, controlled by Cerberus. Cerberus sold Ciesse to GEM in 2006. GEM pursued a stock-market listing for the company, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Fremil International, which had distributed the brand's snow clothing, acquired Ciesse from GEM in 2010. The company attempted to restore the brand's market position through a collection shown at Pitti in 2011 and through closer coordination with its sales network. In November 2019, Mittel acquired 90 percent of Sport Fashion Service, the owner of the Ciesse Piumini brand, for a reported 15 million euros. The brand's history consequently spans Italian down manufacturing, specialist alpine and expedition equipment, urban outerwear, corporate distress, multiple ownership changes, and successive efforts to rebuild its commercial presence.
