Overview
Chubb is the operating brand of Chubb Limited, an American–Swiss insurance group incorporated in Zurich and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The group serves multinational corporations, local businesses, high-net-worth individuals, retail customers, and insurers seeking reinsurance protection. Its principal activities cover commercial and personal property and casualty insurance, personal accident and supplemental health insurance, life insurance, agricultural insurance, specialty liability, surety, and reinsurance. The brand traces its origins to 1882, when Thomas Caldecot Chubb and his son Percy established a marine underwriting business in New York. Their initial activity focused on ships and cargoes and was financed by contributions from prominent merchants. Over time, the Chubb organization developed into a broad commercial insurer. The Chubb Corporation was incorporated in 1967 and became publicly listed in 1984. The modern group was created through the combination of Chubb and ACE Limited. ACE had been formed in 1985 in response to the U.S. liability insurance crisis, initially concentrating on difficult-to-place excess liability and directors' and officers' coverage. It later expanded through acquisitions, including the global property and casualty business of Cigna in 1999, Combined Insurance and other businesses in 2008, and a range of agricultural, life, specialty, and regional insurers. ACE moved its legal domicile from the Cayman Islands to Zurich in 2008. On 1 July 2015, ACE announced an agreement to acquire The Chubb Corporation for approximately $28.3 billion in cash and stock. The transaction closed on 14 January 2016. ACE shareholders received 70 percent of the combined company and former Chubb shareholders 30 percent. Evan G. Greenberg became chairman and chief executive officer, while the combined organization adopted the Chubb name. The transaction retained substantial Chubb operations in North America while making Zurich the headquarters of the global group. Chubb's current business model combines underwriting, risk engineering, claims management, distribution, and specialty expertise. Its commercial franchise supports property, casualty, cyber, professional liability, marine, energy, construction, financial lines, and multinational programs. Its consumer and private-client businesses cover homes, valuables, automobiles, personal liability, travel, accident, health, life, and pet insurance. The group also participates in crop and agribusiness insurance and provides reinsurance capacity to other insurers. The company has maintained a premium, risk-selection-oriented positioning, emphasizing financial strength, technical underwriting, claims service, global coordination, and specialist coverage for complex risks. Its history also includes regulatory and reputational challenges. In 2004, ACE was investigated in the insurance-broker bid-rigging and contingent-commission controversy associated with New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and entered an $80 million settlement arrangement. In 2024, a Chubb subsidiary posted a bond securing Donald Trump's appeal in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case, prompting public discussion because of Greenberg's prior relationship with Trump. Chubb has also faced scrutiny over the reversal or weakening of an earlier coal-insurance restriction. The group remains an active global insurer.
History
Chubb's history begins in New York in 1882, when Thomas Caldecot Chubb and his son Percy created a marine underwriting venture. Supported by funds collected from 100 merchants, the business initially insured ships and cargoes. Its marine roots established a focus on commercial risk assessment that later remained visible in Chubb's specialty and corporate insurance operations. The Chubb organization expanded during the twentieth century and was incorporated as The Chubb Corporation in 1967. It was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1984. The company also owned The Chubb Institute, a chain of technical schools that originated as an employee-training program; the education business was sold in 2004. During the 2000s, Chubb developed a reputation as a major property and casualty insurer and received industry recognition for its admitted commercial insurance business and workplace environment. A parallel history belongs to ACE Limited. ACE was established in 1985 during the U.S. liability insurance crisis, with backing from corporations seeking excess liability and directors' and officers' coverage that was difficult to obtain. Its early Bermuda-centered operation broadened after it assumed management of Corporate Officers & Directors Assurance in 1987. Walter Scott led ACE in the early 1990s, and the company became publicly traded in New York in 1993. Brian Duperreault, who became chief executive in 1994, oversaw a period of acquisition and international diversification. ACE acquired Cigna's global property and casualty business in 1999 for approximately $3.45 billion, adding the Insurance Company of North America and other operations. Evan G. Greenberg became ACE's president and chief executive in 2004. In 2008, ACE purchased Combined Insurance and a high-net-worth personal-lines business from Aon, moved its legal domicile from the Cayman Islands to Zurich, and continued to develop a diversified international platform. Subsequent acquisitions added crop insurance, life operations in Asia, agribusiness, Indonesian insurance, Mexican surety and personal-lines businesses, Thai insurance, Brazilian commercial property and casualty operations, and Fireman's Fund's U.S. high-net-worth personal-lines business. ACE's defining strategic event occurred in 2015, when it agreed to buy The Chubb Corporation. The $28.3 billion cash-and-stock transaction closed on 14 January 2016 after shareholder and regulatory approvals. Former ACE investors owned 70 percent of the combined business and former Chubb investors 30 percent. The organization adopted the Chubb name, retained major North American functions, and continued to be headquartered legally in Zurich. Greenberg became chairman and chief executive of the combined group, while former Chubb chief executive John Finnegan assumed a senior North American external-affairs role. After the combination, Chubb continued to operate across commercial insurance, personal insurance, accident and health, life, and reinsurance. It also extended specialized offerings, including agricultural insurance and pet insurance. In 2020, it announced an updated Enterprise Guard Plus product for Hong Kong businesses. In 2021, Chubb partnered with the WHO on a no-fault COVID-19 vaccine injury compensation scheme for low- and middle-income countries. In 2024, it acquired Healthy Paws, a U.S. pet-insurance managing general agent whose program Chubb had underwritten since 2013. The company has also faced controversy. In 2004, ACE was included in Eliot Spitzer's investigation into insurance-industry bid rigging, contingent commissions, price fixing, and related accounting practices. ACE entered an $80 million settlement arrangement and agreed to change business practices, while Greenberg did not admit personal fault. ACE's reinsurance reporting was additionally examined in the period that followed. In 2024, Chubb's issuance of a bond for Trump's appeal generated public attention because of Greenberg's previous appointment to a Trump trade-policy advisory committee. Environmental groups and other observers later criticized Chubb over reports that it had moved away from a prior coal-insurance restriction. Chubb remains an active global insurance group.
