Overview
Centum Investment Company Plc, generally known as Centum, is a Nairobi-based East African investment company whose shares are traded on the Nairobi Securities Exchange under the symbol CTUM and cross-listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange under the symbol CENT. The company describes itself as an investment channel through which investors can access diversified, high-quality businesses and assets that may otherwise be difficult to reach directly. Its activities span private equity, real-estate development, infrastructure and other development projects, and marketable securities. Centum traces its institutional origins to the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC), a Kenyan government parastatal established in 1954 to encourage local participation in the economy of the newly independent country. ICDC created ICDC Investment Company Limited in 1967, and the subsidiary was listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in the same year. Following the reduction of the Kenyan government's majority ownership, the company adopted an independent professional management structure in 1998. Shareholders approved the name Centum Investment Company Limited in 2008, marking the modern identity of the business while retaining its long-standing public-market presence. It was cross-listed in Uganda in 2011. Centum's investment model has historically combined direct ownership with active portfolio management. Its private-equity activities have included stakes in publishing, financial services, utilities, security, information technology, agriculture, banking, airport catering and vehicle distribution. Centum Capital Partners, a wholly owned and independently managed subsidiary, manages Centum's private-equity assets and can also manage third-party capital. The portfolio has included Longhorn Publishers, Greenblade Growers, Tribus Security Group, Tier Data, Isuzu East Africa, NAS Servair and Sidian Bank, although portfolio ownership can change over time. Real estate and development have become particularly visible parts of the group. Centum Real Estate develops residential and mixed-use projects in Kenya and Uganda. Its wider growth portfolio includes the large Vipingo coastal development in Kilifi County, Kenya, and Pearl Marina on Uganda's Lake Victoria shore. These projects combine housing with serviced land, hospitality, retail, recreational and institutional uses. Centum also has development exposure through the Two Rivers International Finance and Innovation Centre, a services-focused special economic zone in Nairobi; Akiira Geothermal, a proposed geothermal power project; and Jafari Credit, a non-deposit-taking lender serving public-sector employees. The marketable-securities portfolio is managed by Nabo Capital, which has a mandate focused on capital preservation, liquidity and risk-adjusted returns. Centum's approach therefore combines longer-term ownership of operating companies and development assets with liquid securities and fixed-income investments. The business has also realized investments over time, including holdings in Rift Valley Railways, UAP Holdings, Kenya Wine Agencies, GenAfrica Asset Managers, Aon Insurance Brokers, Platcorp Holdings, Coca-Cola bottling businesses and King Beverage. Centum's stated purpose is to create tangible wealth by helping investors build or access enterprises in Africa. Its geographic emphasis is the African Great Lakes region, although some investee companies operate more broadly across the continent. As of 31 March 2025, the company reported total assets of KSh 82.35 billion and shareholders' equity of KSh 45.8 billion, according to the cited Wikipedia reference. These figures are time-specific and should not be treated as current without checking a newer company filing or annual report.
History
Centum's history is rooted in Kenya's post-independence economic-development institutions. The Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation was established in 1954 as a government parastatal intended to help Kenyans participate in and expand the national economy. In 1967, ICDC created ICDC Investment Company Limited as an investment subsidiary. The subsidiary's shares were listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, giving Kenyan investors a public-market route to exposure to domestic companies. The company's governance model changed in 1998 after the Kenyan government reduced part of its majority ownership. Day-to-day management was transferred to an independent professional team, overseen by an independent board elected by shareholders. This transition moved the investment company toward a more commercially managed, shareholder-oriented structure while preserving its connection to ICDC. In 2008, shareholders changed the company's name to Centum Investment Company Limited. The rebranding established Centum as the principal identity of the business and reflected its development from a government-linked investment vehicle into a diversified African investment company. The company maintained its Nairobi listing and later broadened its capital-market reach by listing on the Uganda Securities Exchange on 10 February 2011. Centum's investment strategy has changed as the group expanded. During the period described as Centum 3.0, covering 2014 to 2019, the company organized its activities around four broad lines: real estate, private equity, development and marketable securities. This structure enabled the business to combine operating-company investments with property development, large-scale projects and liquid investments. The private-equity portfolio has covered a wide range of sectors. Investments described in reference material include Longhorn Publishers, whose operations extend across several African countries; Greenblade Growers, an exporter of premium herbs; Tribus Security Group; Tier Data; Isuzu East Africa; NAS Servair; and Sidian Bank. Centum also created or used specialized platforms such as Centum Capital Partners to manage private-equity assets and potentially raise or manage additional third-party capital. Real estate became another important growth engine. Centum Real Estate developed residential projects in Kenya and Uganda, while Vipingo Development pursued a large coastal master-planned development in Kilifi County. Pearl Marina extended the group's property activities into Uganda through a lakeside mixed-use development near Kampala. The group also advanced development projects in finance, energy and credit, including the Two Rivers International Finance and Innovation Centre, Akiira Geothermal and Jafari Credit. Centum has also exited investments as part of portfolio rotation. Reference material records exits from Rift Valley Railways, UAP Holdings, Kenya Wine Agencies, GenAfrica Asset Managers, Aon Insurance Brokers and Platcorp Holdings, among others. Earlier exits also included investments in Helios and African Capital Alliance funds. These transactions illustrate the company's use of realization and reinvestment rather than permanent ownership of every portfolio company. By the 2020s, Centum remained a publicly traded Kenyan investment group with interests extending across the African Great Lakes region. Its marketable-securities activities were managed by Nabo Capital, while its broader portfolio continued to include operating businesses, property assets and projects under development. A December 2024 permit for Vipingo to operate as a Special Economic Zone represented a regulatory milestone for one of its major development assets. The company's reported asset base and shareholders' equity as of 31 March 2025 indicate the scale of the platform, although current financial status requires verification against the latest official filing.
