Overview
The Bristol Aeroplane Company was one of the formative British aviation businesses of the twentieth century. Established in 1910 as the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company, it was created by Sir George White, chairman of the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company, together with his son Stanley and his brother Samuel. The venture was separately capitalised because aviation was still considered commercially uncertain, but it benefited from the founders' financial resources, industrial connections and access to premises and personnel associated with the tramway business. The company initially combined aircraft manufacture with flight training. Its first production effort was an unsuccessful licensed and modified version of a French aircraft, but the failure prompted Bristol to create its own design. The resulting Farman-influenced Bristol Boxkite made its first flight in July 1910 and became an early commercial success. Seventy-six were built, serving as trainers, demonstration aircraft and military machines. Bristol's flying schools at Brooklands and Larkhill also helped establish its reputation and supplied a significant proportion of early Royal Aero Club certificate holders. During the years before the First World War, Bristol expanded its design capability and recruited engineers including Henri Coanda, Pierre Prier, Gordon England and, most importantly, Frank Barnwell. A separate experimental design office was created for naval-aircraft work, while manufacturing expanded to a second site at Brislington. The First World War transformed the company from a small aviation venture into a major military supplier. Its Bristol Fighter became one of the outstanding aircraft of the conflict and remained an important Royal Air Force type during the 1920s. More than 5,300 examples were produced. In 1920 the business adopted the Bristol Aeroplane Company name. It also acquired the aero-engine operation of the failed Cosmos Engineering Company, bringing designer Roy Fedden and the Jupiter radial engine into the Bristol organisation. Engines became a major source of strength: the Jupiter and its successors powered Bristol aircraft and numerous aircraft produced by other manufacturers. Bristol became particularly associated with air-cooled radial engines and developed a substantial engineering identity alongside its airframe business. The inter-war period produced several important aircraft. The Bulldog formed the backbone of RAF fighter forces during the 1930s and was exported to a number of countries. The Blenheim light bomber was Bristol's principal contribution to British rearmament before the Second World War. By the late 1930s the company employed thousands of people, and its Filton works had become one of the world's largest aircraft manufacturing sites. During the Second World War, the Beaufighter was Bristol's most consequential aircraft. Derived from the Beaufort torpedo bomber, it served as a long-range fighter, night fighter, ground-attack aircraft and torpedo bomber with British, Commonwealth and American forces. Wartime production was supported by shadow factories, including facilities at Weston-super-Mare and an underground engine plant near Corsham. The company also operated from temporary wartime headquarters in Bristol. After 1945, Bristol diversified into helicopters, motor vehicles, prefabricated buildings, marine craft and composite materials. Its helicopter operation at Weston-super-Mare was later transferred to Westland, while the car activity became Bristol Cars. In civil aviation, Bristol participated in the post-war British effort to create large transport aircraft. The Brabazon prototype represented an ambitious but commercially unsuccessful attempt to build a very large airliner. History
The Bristol Aeroplane Company's origins lay in the commercial opportunity that Sir George White perceived in aviation after meeting Wilbur Wright in France in 1909. White established a new company rather than placing the venture directly inside Bristol Tramways and Carriage Company. Its early capital was supplied by White and members of his family, while former tramway facilities at Filton provided the first manufacturing premises. Bristol also created flying schools at Brooklands and Larkhill, giving the business an unusual combination of manufacturing, instruction and demonstration capability. The first aircraft project, a licensed French design associated with Zodiac and Gabriel Voisin, failed to meet expectations. Bristol responded by designing its own Farman-derived biplane. The Boxkite first flew in July 1910 and became the company's first widely recognised product. It was used at Bristol's schools, demonstrated to prospective customers and sold to military and overseas buyers. The company then attempted additional pre-war designs, while recruiting specialists and establishing a confidential design office for naval aviation concepts. Frank Barnwell joined the company and eventually became its leading designer. The First World War brought government orders and rapid expansion. Bristol aircraft served the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service, and the company developed the F.2A into the F.2B Fighter. The Fighter combined reconnaissance and combat roles and became one of the most successful British aircraft of the war. Although other designs had more limited success, the company gained the industrial scale and technical experience required for post-war growth. By the end of the conflict, its workforce exceeded 3,000. In 1920, the company was reorganised under the Bristol Aeroplane Company name. A strategically important step was the acquisition of the aero-engine division of Cosmos Engineering. This brought the company into possession of the Jupiter design and a team led by Roy Fedden. The Jupiter and later Bristol radial engines became highly successful, powering Bristol aircraft and many designs from other manufacturers. During the 1920s and 1930s, engine operations often outperformed the airframe side commercially and helped make Bristol a major force in British propulsion. The Bulldog was Bristol's leading inter-war fighter. It served extensively with the RAF and was exported to several countries. The company also developed a reputation for steel-tube and steel-strip airframe construction at a time when much of the industry was moving toward light alloys. Bristol became a public limited company in 1935, just as British rearmament created large demand for aircraft and engines. The Blenheim light bomber was central to that expansion. On the eve of the Second World War, the Filton works ranked among the largest aircraft factories in the world. The Beaufighter was Bristol's defining wartime aircraft. Developed from the Beaufort, it used the company's engine and airframe expertise to create a versatile two-seat aircraft. It operated in fighter, night-fighter, maritime-strike and ground-attack roles across multiple theatres. Bristol expanded production through shadow factories, although the underground engine facility at Hawthorn did not achieve the intended level of output before its closure in 1945. After the war, the company attempted to reposition itself across both military and civilian markets. It created a helicopter division at Weston-super-Mare, ventured into automobile production and retained interests in materials and other industrial activities. Its largest civil-aircraft projects were the Brabazon and Britannia. The Brabazon was technologically impressive but commercially misjudged and was cancelled in 1953. The Britannia was a capable long-range turboprop airliner and achieved production success, but entered a market increasingly shaped by jet aircraft. Bristol also worked on advanced supersonic transport research, with preliminary work that contributed to the programme eventually known as Concorde. Corporate reorganisation followed the changing structure of the British aerospace industry. In 1956, the aircraft and engine operations were separated. Bristol Aircraft joined other manufacturers in 1959 to form the British Aircraft Corporation, while Bristol Aero Engines joined Armstrong Siddeley and later became part of Rolls-Royce. Through these successor companies, the Bristol name and technical heritage continued within British Aerospace and modern aerospace enterprises operating at Filton.
