Overview
Brewin Dolphin is a British wealth management business whose institutional history can be traced to a stockbroking firm established by John Dawes in 1762. Dawes was one of the founders of the London Stock Exchange, and the business that grew from his firm passed through a succession of partnerships before becoming Wontner, Dolphin & Francis in 1970. A merger with Brewin & Co in 1974 created the Brewin Dolphin name. The company developed from its stockbroking heritage into a broader investment and wealth management group. It provides discretionary and advisory investment management, financial planning and related wealth services to private individuals, companies, charities and intermediary organizations. Its service model combines portfolio management with planning around retirement, intergenerational wealth and wider financial objectives. The firm has operated through a network of offices across the United Kingdom, as well as locations in Jersey and Ireland. Brewin Dolphin was incorporated in 1987 and acquired by Scandinavian Bank in the same year. A management buy-out returned the business to independent ownership in 1992, after which it joined the London Stock Exchange in 1994. Expansion subsequently included acquisitions of Bell Lawrie, Wise Speke and Popes, strengthening its presence in Scotland, northern England and the English regions. The business also developed a wider wealth-management platform through later acquisitions, including Duncan Lawrie Asset Management, Investec Wealth Management's Irish operations, and several independent financial advice and consultancy firms. The group divested Stocktrade to Alliance Trust Savings in 2015 while continuing to build its core wealth-management operations. Acquisitions in 2018 and 2019 included Aylwin, Epoch Wealth Management and Mathieson Consulting. These transactions broadened its advice, investment-management and actuarial capabilities and supported a strategy focused on serving clients through regional offices and professional intermediaries. In March 2022, Royal Bank of Canada made a recommended offer for Brewin Dolphin valued at approximately £1.6 billion. The transaction received the required shareholder and regulatory approvals and completed on 27 September 2022. Following the acquisition, the business became part of RBC Wealth Management and has been known as RBC Brewin Dolphin. The brand remains active, operating as a wealth-management business within the Royal Bank of Canada's broader wealth-management organization.
History
Brewin Dolphin's origins reach back to 1762, when John Dawes established a stockbroking business. Dawes was among the founders of the London Stock Exchange. The enterprise later passed through a series of partnership structures and became Wontner, Dolphin & Francis in 1970. In 1974, Brewin & Co merged with Wontner, Dolphin & Francis, creating Brewin Dolphin and establishing the name under which the modern business developed. The company was incorporated in 1987 and was acquired by Scandinavian Bank during the same year. A management buy-out in 1992 restored independent ownership. Brewin Dolphin then became a publicly traded company, completing its first listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1994. During this period and the years that followed, its business evolved beyond traditional stockbroking toward investment management and broader wealth services. Expansion was supported by a series of acquisitions. Bell Lawrie, a Scottish investment manager, was acquired in 1993. Wise Speke, which operated in northern England, joined the group in 1998, and Popes, based in Stoke-on-Trent, was acquired in 2002. These transactions increased the firm's geographic reach and added local investment-management capabilities. In 2015, Brewin Dolphin sold Stocktrade to Alliance Trust Savings, streamlining its portfolio of businesses. The firm continued to build its wealth-management platform in the second half of the 2010s. Duncan Lawrie Asset Management was acquired in December 2016. The company also acquired the financial advice firms Aylwin in 2018 and Epoch Wealth Management in 2019, while Mathieson Consulting, an actuarial consultancy, was acquired in 2019. In October 2019, Brewin Dolphin acquired Investec Wealth Management's Irish business, supporting its operations outside Great Britain. Brewin Dolphin's operating model has centered on investment management and financial planning delivered through a network of offices. Its client base has included individuals, companies, charities and professional intermediaries. The firm has maintained operations in the United Kingdom, Jersey and Ireland, with a service proposition based on tailored portfolios and advice rather than a single mass-market investment product. In March 2022, Royal Bank of Canada made a recommended offer for the company valued at approximately £1.6 billion. The transaction required shareholder and regulatory approval, which was obtained later that year. The acquisition completed on 27 September 2022. Brewin Dolphin subsequently became part of RBC Wealth Management and adopted the trading name RBC Brewin Dolphin. The brand remains active within the Royal Bank of Canada's wealth-management group.
