Bitė Group

Bitė Group is a Lithuanian telecommunications conglomerate whose principal operating markets are Lithuania and Latvia, with a broader Baltic presence through its media assets. The group traces its operating origins to 1995, when Bitė began providing mobile telecommunications services in Lithuania. It became the country's second mobile-telephony operator after Omnitel, which was later consolidated into the business that became Telia Lithuania. Bitė initially built its business around GSM mobile services and subsequently expanded its network technology through EDGE, HSDPA and LTE-Advanced deployments. The group established an important international commercial relationship in 2003 by signing a Partner Network Agreement with Vodafone for its Lithuanian mobile service. After Bitė entered Latvia in 2005 through Bite Latvija, the Vodafone relationship was extended to the Latvian operation in 2006. This arrangement positioned Bitė as a long-standing regional Vodafone partner while allowing it to operate under its own local brands and corporate structure. Ownership of Bitė Group changed several times. Danish telecommunications company TDC sold the group to the private-equity firm Mid Europa Partners in 2007. Mid Europa later agreed to sell Bitė to Providence Equity Partners in December 2015, with completion taking place in February 2016. Since the Providence acquisition, the group has been represented through a Luxembourg-registered holding structure associated with Providence Equity rather than the Dutch entity that had represented it during earlier ownership periods. Providence expanded Bitė beyond telecommunications through the acquisition of Viasat's Baltic media and satellite-television operations from Modern Times Group. The transaction, announced in 2017 and completed in October of that year, gave Bitė a substantial presence in Baltic television, subscription video and related media services. The acquired media operations initially operated under the name All Media Baltics and were renamed TV3 Group in 2019. Through TV3 Group and its related companies, the group gained media operations in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, including television broadcasting, radio, digital media, satellite television and streaming-related services. Bitė Group's telecommunications portfolio includes UAB Bitė Lietuva, SIA Bite Latvija and network-infrastructure businesses such as TeleTower entities in Lithuania and Latvia. Its media portfolio has included TV3 Group companies, Home3 satellite television operations, pan-Baltic television channels, radio stations and digital-media businesses. In January 2023, TV3 Group signed an agreement to acquire radio stations operated by M-1, extending the group's media footprint in Lithuania. The group is therefore best understood as a Baltic communications house combining mobile connectivity with television, radio, satellite distribution and digital media. It has expressed an intention to enter Estonia's telecommunications market if it can obtain suitable 5G spectrum, although its existing Estonian presence is principally through media and satellite-television operations rather than a national mobile network. In Lithuania, the company has announced a planned 3G network shutdown for 1 December 2025.

Bitė Group began operating in Lithuania in 1995 as a mobile-network operator. Its launch made it the second company to provide mobile telephony in the country, following Omnitel. The business initially delivered GSM services and later followed the wider telecommunications industry's migration toward faster data technologies. Bitė introduced EDGE services in 2004, HSDPA services in 2006 and LTE-Advanced services in 2014. The company developed an international partnership with Vodafone in the early 2000s. On 21 July 2003, Bitė signed a Partner Network Agreement covering its Lithuanian mobile service. After entering Latvia in 2005 through Bite Latvija, Bitė extended the Vodafone agreement to its Latvian operation in April 2006. This relationship made Bitė a long-standing Vodafone partner in the Baltic region while the group continued to operate under its own Bitė and Bite brands. Bitė's ownership history reflects the consolidation and private-equity ownership of regional telecommunications businesses. TDC, a Danish telecommunications company, owned the group until it announced a sale to Mid Europa Partners in early 2007. Mid Europa later announced in December 2015 that it would sell Bitė Group to Providence Equity Partners. The transaction closed in February 2016. During the earlier ownership period, the group was represented by Bite Finance International B.V., a Netherlands-registered entity. Following Providence's acquisition, representation moved to PLT VII Finance S.à r.l., registered in Luxembourg and ultimately associated with Providence Equity GP L.P. in the Cayman Islands. Providence's ownership was followed by a major expansion into media. In March 2017, Providence announced the acquisition of Viasat's Baltic media and satellite-television business from Modern Times Group, which was restructuring around its video-game activities. Bitė was identified as the Providence-owned entity that would acquire the assets, and the transaction was completed in October 2017. The resulting pan-Baltic media company initially used the name All Media Baltics and was renamed TV3 Group in 2019. The media portfolio gave Bitė operations in Estonia in addition to its telecommunications markets in Lithuania and Latvia. In Estonia, TV3 Group-related companies operate television, digital-media and satellite-television activities, including Home3, which previously used the Viasat and TVPlay Home names. The broader portfolio has also included television and radio broadcasters in Lithuania and Latvia, digital-media companies, pan-Baltic television channels and a United Kingdom-licensed broadcasting company. Bitė Group's telecommunications assets include UAB Bitė Lietuva in Lithuania, SIA Bite Latvija in Latvia, and TeleTower-related network-infrastructure companies in both markets. The group has considered entering Estonian telecommunications, subject to obtaining spectrum in an Estonian 5G auction, but its established Estonian activities have principally been in media rather than mobile-network operations. The group continued to broaden its media business in 2023, when TV3 Group signed an agreement to acquire radio stations operated by M-1. In the financial markets, Bitė Group raised €620 million through a bond issue in 2020. Its Lithuanian telecommunications business has also been moving away from legacy network generations: the 3G network was scheduled for shutdown on 1 December 2025. Bitė Group consequently combines a mature Baltic mobile operator with a regional media platform spanning television, radio, satellite distribution and digital entertainment.
