Bipop

Bipop was the commonly used name of Banca Popolare di Brescia S.c.r.l., an Italian cooperative bank based in Brescia, Lombardy. It was created in 1983 through the merger of Banca Popolare di Lumezzane and Banca Popolare di Palazzolo, consolidating two local banking institutions into a larger cooperative bank serving the Brescia area and the wider Italian market. Banca Popolare di Brescia, commonly referred to as Bipop, was established in 1983 through the merger of Banca Popolare di Lumezzane and Banca Popolare di Palazzolo. The bank had attained a notable position among Italian financial institutions by the end of the decade. Mediobanca's historical ranking placed it thirtieth by client deposits in 1998. In 1999, Bipop's share capital was reported in Italian lire. These data indicate that the bank had grown beyond a small local institution, although it remained rooted in the regional cooperative-banking system. The decisive corporate change occurred in 1999, when Banca Popolare di Brescia merged with Cassa di Risparmio di Reggio Emilia, known as Carire. The resulting institution was named Bipop Carire. This transaction absorbed the original Bipop entity into a broader banking organization while preserving its name as part of the new group's identity. On 1 July 2002, Bipop Carire was merged with Banca di Roma to create Capitalia. The transaction formed a larger Italian banking group and further removed Bipop from the market as an independent institution. Capitalia was later acquired by UniCredit in 2007. The Bipop banking lineage consequently passed into UniCredit through the successive Bipop Carire and Capitalia structures. Bipop's historical importance is consequently associated with three developments: the consolidation of cooperative banks in northern Italy, the integration of traditional banking with asset-management businesses connected to Fineco, and the series of mergers that reshaped Italy's banking sector from the late 1990s through the 2000s.
