Overview
Bharti Airtel Limited, marketed principally as Airtel, is an Indian multinational telecommunications company headquartered in New Delhi. It is the flagship communications business of Bharti Enterprises and has developed from an Indian cellular operator into a multi-market provider of mobile connectivity, fixed-line broadband, digital television, enterprise communications and related digital services. The company operates principally in India and has telecommunications businesses in selected South Asian, African and Channel Islands markets; the exact service portfolio differs by country. The business traces its roots to Sunil Bharti Mittal's early telecommunications manufacturing activities. During the 1980s, Mittal began assembling push-button telephones in India after importing similar products from Singapore. Bharti Telecom later worked with Siemens on electronic telephone manufacturing and expanded into fax machines, cordless phones and other equipment. This experience helped establish the Bharti group before it moved decisively into network operations. In 1992, Mittal secured a bid for a Delhi cellular licence and formed a technical and strategic relationship with France's Vivendi to satisfy the operating-experience requirement attached to the licence. Government approval followed in 1994, and cellular services began in Delhi in 1995 under the AirTel brand. Bharti subsequently expanded through acquisitions and licence growth, entering Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh through JT Holdings, Chennai through Skycell Communications, Kolkata through Spice Cell, Rajasthan through Hexacom and additional territories including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In 2003, the company's cellular operations were consolidated under the single Airtel brand. Airtel's growth was supported by a mass-market approach to mobile services and by outsourcing or partnering for parts of its network and infrastructure model. It introduced value-added services such as Hello Tunes, developed national voice and data coverage, and progressively adopted 2G, 3G, 4G, LTE Advanced, VoLTE and 5G technologies. Its Indian portfolio now spans mobile voice and data, home broadband, fixed-line voice, digital television, entertainment and enterprise connectivity. Products are sold through consumer, business and distribution channels, while Airtel's international subsidiaries adapt their offerings to local markets. International expansion became a defining part of the company's history. Airtel launched mobile operations in Sri Lanka in 2009 and acquired Zain's operations in 15 African countries in 2010. The Zain transaction substantially broadened Airtel's international footprint and became one of the largest overseas acquisitions by an Indian company at the time. Airtel also acquired or invested in businesses and spectrum assets in Bangladesh, Seychelles and India, including Qualcomm-backed broadband spectrum, Augere Wireless, Telenor India, Tikona's 4G assets and the consumer mobile operations of Tata Teleservices. The company has continued to invest in network modernization and digital platforms. Recent initiatives have included collaboration with Google Cloud on cloud adoption and generative artificial intelligence solutions for Indian businesses, a Nokia-supported non-standalone 5G Cloud-RAN trial, and an Ericsson agreement covering 4G and 5G radio modernization and centralized or Open-RAN-ready network solutions. In 2025, Airtel announced an agreement with SpaceX to explore satellite-based internet services in India, subject to regulatory approvals. Airtel remains an active, publicly listed telecommunications operator, with India as its central market and international operations contributing to its broader identity.
History
Bharti Airtel's history began before the Airtel network brand existed. In 1984, Sunil Bharti Mittal started assembling push-button telephones in India, replacing bulky rotary designs and reducing the country's dependence on imported equipment. Bharti Telecom Limited entered a technical arrangement with Siemens for electronic telephone production and later made fax machines, cordless telephones and other telecommunications equipment. Mittal identified mobile communications as a major growth opportunity during India's early cellular-licensing process. In 1992, he successfully bid for one of the Delhi mobile licences and partnered with Vivendi to meet the licence requirement for prior telecom-operating experience. After government approval in 1994, Bharti Cellular Limited launched Delhi cellular services in 1995 under the AirTel name. The company expanded through a combination of acquisitions, licence holdings and network investment. It acquired control of JT Holdings in 1999, Skycell Communications in Chennai in 2000 and Spice Cell in Kolkata in 2001. Bharti Enterprises became publicly listed in 2002, and the cellular businesses were unified under the Airtel brand in 2003. Further Indian expansion followed through the acquisition of Hexacom and entry into Rajasthan in 2004, followed by network extension to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2005. The company also developed a distinctive consumer proposition through lower-cost voice services, national scale and value-added products such as Hello Tunes. Its network strategy increasingly incorporated partnerships with technology suppliers, including Alcatel-Lucent for fixed-line IP access infrastructure. Airtel began international operations in Sri Lanka in 2009. Its most consequential international move came in 2010, when it acquired Zain's mobile operations in 15 African countries. The transaction made Airtel a large multinational operator and materially changed the geographic scope of the group. Airtel also acquired Telecom Seychelles in 2010 and took control of Warid Telecom's Bangladeshi operation, which later became part of Robi Axiata while retaining Airtel as a product brand. The company explored a possible combination with MTN Group in 2006 and again in 2009, but the discussions ended without a transaction. Airtel instead continued building its Indian spectrum and customer base. It acquired a majority interest in Qualcomm-backed Wireless Business Services in 2012, later taking full ownership; purchased Augere Wireless in 2015; acquired Telenor India's assets and customers in 2017; and bought Tikona's 4G spectrum and sites in the same period. The Tata Teleservices consumer mobile businesses were transferred to Airtel in 2019 after regulatory and corporate approvals. Airtel's more recent development has centered on higher-speed networks, convergence and digital services. In India, the company has deployed 4G and VoLTE at scale and expanded into 5G, fiber broadband, digital television, enterprise connectivity and cloud-related services. International subsidiaries have continued to provide locally adapted mobile and fixed services. The company has also pursued technology collaborations involving cloud computing, artificial intelligence, Open-RAN-ready infrastructure and satellite connectivity. These initiatives reflect Airtel's continuing transition from a conventional mobile carrier into a broader communications and digital-services platform.
