Overview
Betashares is an Australian financial-services and asset-management firm best known for developing and operating exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Founded in 2009 by former lawyers Alex Vynokur and David Nathanson, the company launched its first ETFs in December 2010 and became one of the prominent independent participants in Australia's rapidly expanding ETF market. Its range has broadened from equity index exposure to include cash, fixed income, commodities, actively managed bond strategies, thematic investments, and digital-asset-related products. The business serves several parts of the investment ecosystem. Its ETF range is designed for investors seeking listed, generally rules-based exposure to Australian and international markets, specific industries, investment themes, income strategies, and alternative asset classes. Examples include the Betashares Australia 200 ETF, the Betashares Nasdaq 100 ETF, the Australian High Interest Cash ETF, and the Global Sustainability Leaders ETF. The firm also operates products linked to cryptocurrency and digital-asset businesses, including the Crypto Innovators ETF. Some fixed-income products are managed in cooperation with external investment managers. Betashares has expanded beyond fund manufacturing and distribution. It offers Betashares Direct, an online investment platform aimed at self-directed retail investors. The platform initially supported ETF trading and was later extended to other listed securities. The company also provides managed accounts and portfolio services for financial advisers and wealth platforms. In 2023 it entered the Australian superannuation sector by acquiring the superannuation business of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank. Ownership has remained centered on the Australian management team, while outside investors have supplied growth capital. TA Associates acquired a minority interest in 2021. In 2024, Singaporean sovereign wealth investor Temasek agreed to invest up to A$300 million for another minority stake. The company subsequently expanded its retail-investor presence through the 2025 acquisition of financial-media and education business Equity Mates, while the Equity Mates brand and its co-founders continued operating within the enlarged group. Betashares also broadened its institutional and adviser offering in 2025 through Trellia Wealth Partners, created by combining its portfolio-services activities with InvestSense. Trellia provides index-based and customized managed portfolios. Later that year, Betashares Private Capital was formed to address private-market investing and partnered with U.S. firm Cliffwater on private-credit products for wholesale investors. By June 2025, the company reported that total funds under management had exceeded A$50 billion. Betashares therefore combines a large ETF franchise with retail investing, superannuation, adviser-managed accounts, investment education, and selected private-market capabilities.
History
Betashares was established in Australia in 2009 by Alex Vynokur and David Nathanson, both of whom had backgrounds in law. The founders created the business during a period when exchange-traded funds were becoming more established as a way for investors to obtain diversified market exposure through securities traded on an exchange. Betashares launched its first ETFs in December 2010. The company initially built its identity around listed investment products, but its range developed considerably over time. It added currency exposure, fixed-income products, actively managed bond ETFs, commodity-related strategies, and thematic funds. Its equity products came to cover both broad market benchmarks and themes such as technology, sustainability, cybersecurity, and robotics. The business also developed products connected with digital assets and cryptocurrency-related industries. This expansion allowed Betashares to serve investors seeking both conventional index exposure and more specialized investment ideas. Betashares grew into a broader asset-management platform serving retail investors, advisers, and institutions. In addition to ETFs, it developed managed-account and portfolio capabilities for advisers using wealth platforms. In 2021, TA Associates acquired a minority stake, providing an external institutional shareholder while the Australian management team retained a significant ownership and operating role. The company's scope widened further in 2023. In September, it entered the Australian superannuation sector through the acquisition of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank's superannuation business. In October, it launched Betashares Direct, an online platform intended for self-directed retail investors. The platform began with ETF trading and expanded in 2024 to include other listed securities, giving Betashares a more direct relationship with individual investors. In June 2024, Temasek agreed to acquire a minority stake and invest up to A$300 million. Temasek joined TA Associates and Betashares employees among the company's shareholders. The investment supported the continuing development of the business while leaving it privately held rather than publicly listed. Betashares pursued several forms of expansion in 2025. By June, it reported that total funds under management had exceeded A$50 billion. In July, it acquired Equity Mates, a financial-media and education company founded in 2017. The transaction was intended to deepen Betashares' presence in the retail-investor market, while Equity Mates continued under its established brand and its co-founders remained involved. During the same month, Betashares announced Trellia Wealth Partners, formed through the combination of its portfolio-services operations and the investment consultancy InvestSense. Trellia launched as a managed-accounts provider offering index-based and customized portfolios, with approximately A$8 billion in funds under management at launch. Later in 2025, Betashares created Betashares Private Capital to pursue private-market opportunities. The division partnered with U.S.-based Cliffwater to offer private-credit products to wholesale investors. These developments marked a shift from a primarily ETF-centered identity toward a multi-channel investment group covering listed funds, digital retail investing, superannuation, adviser solutions, investment education, managed portfolios, and selected private-market strategies. In January 2026, founder and chief executive Alex Vynokur was also reported as leading a group of more than 100 Australian business figures seeking a Royal Commission into the 2025 Bondi Beach shootings and related concerns about antisemitism and security failures.
