Overview
Bestune is a Chinese passenger-vehicle brand owned by China FAW Group. It was introduced in 2006 under the English name Besturn, with the Besturn B70 serving as its first model. The marque was created to represent FAW’s self-developed passenger vehicles and has primarily occupied the budget and value-oriented segments of the Chinese automotive market. The first B70 was developed on a platform related to the Mazda 6, reflecting FAW’s longstanding technical relationship with Mazda. A smaller B50 sedan followed in 2009, expanding the brand’s reach in the compact-car segment. During the 2010s, Bestune broadened its range with additional sedans and sport utility vehicles, including the B30, B90, X40 and X80. The company subsequently moved toward a more SUV-centered portfolio with models such as the T33, T55, T77, T99 and B70S. It also introduced electrified products, including the E01 battery-electric SUV and the NAT, also known as the E05, an electric multipurpose vehicle. Besturn began international sales in Russia in 2012, initially through the B50. FAW later pursued local production arrangements for the X80, which entered Russian manufacture in 2017. The international footprint remained more limited than the brand’s domestic business, and Bestune has principally been positioned as a China-focused marque. At the end of 2018, FAW changed the brand’s English name from Besturn to Bestune while retaining the Chinese name Benteng, written 奔腾. The change formed part of a broader effort to refresh the marque’s identity and distinguish it from earlier product generations. In December 2020, FAW restructured the business: Bestune was transferred from FAW Car to FAW Corporation Limited and was set to operate as an independent wholly owned subsidiary within the FAW Group structure. The brand unveiled a new logo in December 2022. Bestune’s corporate capitalization also evolved. In 2023, its registered capital increased from CNY 6.0 billion to CNY 8.4 billion, and Yueda Automotive Group became its first external investor. The disclosed post-increase ownership was 86.16% for FAW Corporation Limited, 11.87% for FAW Equity Investment and 1.97% for Yueda Automotive Group. Later capital-raising activity described by the reference material further increased the participation of Yueda and several institutional investors. The marque has increasingly incorporated battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles into its product strategy. Its model history includes conventional sedans and SUVs as well as electric SUVs and MPVs. The Bestune Pony city car represents a small battery-electric offering, while the related Yueyi product initiative extends FAW’s new-energy ambitions into additional vehicle sizes and body styles. Bestune therefore combines a value-oriented mass-market identity with a gradual transition toward electrification. Its principal competitive context is China’s crowded domestic passenger-car market, where affordability, equipment, connected-car functions and new-energy technology are central to brand positioning.
History
Bestune originated in 2006 as Besturn, a passenger-car marque established by China FAW Group. Its debut product, the Besturn B70, was developed using technology and a platform associated with the Mazda 6. The model introduced FAW’s marque to the market as a distinct self-owned passenger-vehicle brand. In 2009, the smaller B50 sedan joined the range and became the first Besturn model to enter the Russian market when FAW began international sales there in 2012. During the 2010s, the brand expanded beyond its initial sedan offering. The B90 added a larger sedan, while the B30 targeted the compact segment. FAW also introduced the X80 and X40 sport utility vehicles, allowing Besturn to participate in the shift toward SUV purchasing in China. The X80 was associated with a planned Russian manufacturing arrangement with Avtotor; production in Russia began in April 2017. Subsequent model development increasingly favored SUVs, including the T33, T55, T77, T99 and B70S. At the end of 2018, FAW renamed the English-language brand Bestune. The Chinese name, Benteng, was retained. The new spelling was applied as the company sought to refresh its identity and present a more unified brand image. Electrification became a more visible part of the portfolio in the following years. Bestune introduced the E01 electric SUV and the NAT/E05 electric MPV, alongside conventional internal-combustion models. In December 2020, FAW announced a corporate restructuring in which Bestune was transferred from FAW Car to FAW Corporation Limited, placing the brand under direct FAW Group control and allowing it to operate as an independent wholly owned subsidiary. In December 2022, the company announced a new logo. The same period also saw FAW transfer a minority interest in FAW Jiefang to Bestune as part of financial support and group-level restructuring measures. Bestune’s ownership and capitalization broadened in 2023. The company increased registered capital from CNY 6.0 billion to CNY 8.4 billion. FAW Corporation Limited and FAW Equity Investment remained the controlling shareholders, while Yueda Automotive Group, a subsidiary of state-owned Yueda Group, entered as an external investor. Later disclosed investment activity involved additional institutional and corporate participants and reduced the combined relative stake of FAW and FAW Equity Investment, although FAW remained the dominant shareholder. The product range has continued to change as older sedans and SUVs were discontinued and new-energy vehicles gained importance. The Bestune Pony represents the marque’s small battery-electric city-car direction. A separate Yueyi initiative has been associated with electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles in larger segments, reflecting FAW’s effort to develop dedicated new-energy offerings. Bestune’s current strategic identity is therefore based on affordable passenger vehicles, broader SUV coverage and a gradual transition from conventional powertrains to battery-electric and hybrid technology.
