Overview
Bentley Systems is a United States-based enterprise software company focused on the design, construction and operation of infrastructure. Its products support the full life cycle of large physical assets, including roads, railways, bridges, buildings, industrial facilities, power plants, water systems and utility networks. The company serves architecture, engineering and construction organizations, infrastructure owners and operators, government agencies, industrial businesses, transportation authorities, energy companies, mining organizations and geospatial professionals. Founded in 1984 by brothers Keith A. Bentley and Barry J. Bentley, the company developed from an early focus on computer-aided design software into a broad infrastructure-engineering technology platform. Its early products addressed the need to view and modify designs created in Intergraph environments. PseudoStation, introduced commercially in 1985, enabled users of Intergraph VAX systems to work with IGDS design files using lower-cost graphics terminals. An MS-DOS version of MicroStation followed in 1986 and became a central product in Bentley's long-term software portfolio. Bentley's business spans engineering applications, information management, construction management, geospatial processing, simulation, digital twins, infrastructure analytics and geoscience. MicroStation provides computer-aided design, modeling, visualization and design-review capabilities. Sector-specific Open applications extend those capabilities to roads, rail, bridges, buildings, plants, utilities, hydraulic systems and site development. Structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, offshore and power-transmission analysis products broaden the company's reach beyond drafting and modeling. The company also combines cloud services for project delivery, construction and asset operations. ProjectWise manages engineering and project information across heterogeneous design and document environments. SYNCHRO supports construction planning, scheduling, four-dimensional modeling and field productivity. AssetWise manages information about infrastructure assets throughout their operating lives. These products are increasingly presented as part of Bentley Infrastructure Cloud, an integrated environment intended to connect project data, construction information and operational asset records. Digital twins are a major part of Bentley's positioning. The iTwin Platform is designed to connect engineering models, reality data, geospatial information and enterprise records so that infrastructure owners can visualize, monitor, simulate and manage physical assets. Bentley's acquisition of Cesium expanded its capabilities in open three-dimensional geospatial applications and large-scale 3D data streaming. The company also uses artificial intelligence and machine learning in products for roadway assessment, design assistance, document discovery, model interaction and infrastructure monitoring. Seequent, acquired in 2021, gives Bentley a substantial geoscience business. Its software supports geological modeling, geotechnical and geoenvironmental analysis, earth modeling and scientific data management for mining, civil engineering, energy and related fields. Other acquisitions have added capabilities in structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, reality capture, transportation planning, bridge inspection, power-line design, construction simulation and infrastructure analytics. Bentley attempted an initial public offering in 2002 but withdrew it before completion. Siemens acquired a minority stake in 2016 and entered into software-development cooperation with the company. Bentley completed a public-market IPO in 2020, with its Class B common stock trading under the symbol BSY. The company remains headquartered in Pennsylvania while maintaining development, sales and other operations across numerous countries. In 2024, Nicholas Cumins became its first non-family chief executive, following the retirement o…
History
Bentley Systems was founded in 1984 by brothers Keith A. Bentley and Barry J. Bentley. Keith Bentley had previously worked on computer-aided design software while employed as a programmer at DuPont. After retaining rights to that work, he joined Barry's software business; the brothers subsequently moved toward CAD products for infrastructure and engineering users. Their brothers Greg, Scott and Ray later became involved, and the company relocated to Pennsylvania. The company's first important commercial product was PseudoStation, introduced in 1985. It allowed users of Intergraph VAX systems to view and modify designs created in Intergraph's IGDS environment through comparatively inexpensive graphics terminals. In 1986, Bentley released an MS-DOS version of MicroStation. MicroStation developed into the company's core design and modeling platform and provided the technological basis for later discipline-specific applications. During the 1990s and 2000s, Bentley expanded through both product development and acquisitions. It added tools for architecture, civil engineering, road and rail design, structural analysis, geotechnical work, plant design, surveying, facilities management, raster conversion, bridge engineering and construction simulation. Notable transactions included the acquisition of IdeaGraphix in 1997, software businesses from Intergraph in 2001, Haestad Methods in 2004 and the STAAD product line from Research Engineers International in 2005. These additions helped shift Bentley from a CAD-centered vendor toward a broader infrastructure engineering software provider. The company continued building specialist capabilities in the 2010s. Acquisitions added geotechnical and geoenvironmental modeling through gINT, PLAXIS and SoilVision; reality modeling through Acute3D, Pointools and related technologies; transportation planning through Citilabs and INRO; construction management through SYNCHRO; and power-transmission analysis through Power Line Systems. Bentley also developed its cloud and information-management strategy around ProjectWise, AssetWise and later the iTwin Platform. In 2002, Bentley filed for an initial public offering but withdrew the offering before it took effect. In 2016, Siemens announced a minority investment in Bentley and cooperation on joint software development. Bentley became a public company in 2020, listing its Class B common stock on Nasdaq under the ticker BSY. The company expanded its geoscience portfolio significantly through the 2021 acquisition of Seequent Holdings. Seequent brought products for geological modeling, geotechnical analysis, geoscience data management and earth sciences. Subsequent investments and acquisitions, including Blyncsy in 2023 and Cesium in 2024, reinforced Bentley's emphasis on artificial intelligence, infrastructure analytics, reality data, open 3D geospatial technology and digital twins. Leadership also changed during this period. Keith Bentley retired from his chief technology role in 2023, and Greg Bentley retired as CEO in 2024. Nicholas Cumins became chief executive in July 2024, the first non-family leader of the company. Bentley's current strategy centers on connecting engineering design, project delivery, construction, operations and geospatial information through cloud platforms and digital representations of infrastructure.
