1979
Baffi-Sarcinelli judicial investigation
Governor Paolo Baffi and deputy director Mario Sarcinelli were accused in a Rome investigation involving alleged failures to report or act on banking-supervision findings. Sarcinelli was arrested and temporarily removed from supervisory responsibilities, while Baffi avoided arrest because of his age. Both men were acquitted in 1981, and the episode became a prominent example in discussions of political pressure on central-bank supervision.
1893
Banca Romana scandal and the creation of Banca d'Italia
The Banca Romana scandal revealed unauthorized note issuance, weak governance and political connections in Italy's fragmented issuing-bank system. The crisis was a major factor behind the 1893 reorganization that created Banca d'Italia. The scandal concerned the predecessor institution and the broader banking system rather than misconduct by the newly established central bank.
