Babelscape is a deep-tech startup company founded in 2016 as a spin-off of Sapienza University of Rome and recognized as an Innovative SME (PMI innovativa) in Italy. The company focuses on multilingual Natural Language Processing (NLP), with the core mission of overcoming language barriers and enabling the understanding and generation of text across a wide range of languages and applications. Babelscape combines cutting-edge research with innovative industry solutions, including next-generation large language models (LLMs) for multilingual understanding and generation. It is leading the industrialization of Minerva, the first Italian LLM, and its evolution ChatMinerva, a multimodal AI assistant.

Thanks to technology transfer from the NLP research group led by Prof. Roberto Navigli, Babelscape combines cutting-edge research with innovative industry solutions, including next-generation large language models (LLMs) for multilingual understanding and generation. Babelscape is leading the industrialization of Minerva, the first Italian LLM, and its evolution ChatMinerva, a multimodal AI assistant.

• Minerva

  The first family of large language models pretrained from scratch in Italian, built on trillions of words from open-access Italian and English data. Initially developed by the Sapienza NLP group led by Professor Roberto Navigli, in collaboration with FAIR and powered by CINECA's Leonardo supercomputer. Now being further developed and industrialized by Babelscape.

• ChatMinerva

  A multimodal AI assistant with live web access, document and image understanding, OCR, voice interaction, and enhanced safety. Developed entirely in Italy, with full transparency and control over every stage of training and alignment.
