Azamara Journey

Azamara Journey is a small R-class cruise ship that entered service in 2000. The vessel was constructed at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, as the sixth ship in Renaissance Cruises' eight-vessel R-class series. It was originally named R Six and was designed for boutique-style cruising, with a substantially smaller scale than the large resort ships that dominate much of the contemporary cruise industry. The ship's early commercial history was shaped by the financial collapse of Renaissance Cruises. Although it was sold to Cruise Company Invest in early 2001, the vessel was not immediately placed into sustained service after Renaissance became insolvent in September of that year. In the following period it was associated with Pullmantur Cruises. It was marketed under the name Blue Star and was formally renamed Blue Dream in 2005. Pullmantur used the vessel from 2006 onward. A major change took place in December 2008, when Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Pullmantur's parent company, transferred Blue Dream to its new Azamara Cruises subsidiary. The ship was renamed Azamara Journey and became one of the founding vessels of the Azamara brand's upscale, destination-oriented fleet. Azamara Cruises was subsequently known as Azamara Club Cruises. Alongside her sister ships Azamara Quest, formerly R Seven, and later Azamara Pursuit, formerly R Eight, Journey was used for international itineraries emphasizing smaller ports and longer destination stays. Its sister ship R Seven became Azamara Quest, and R Eight later became Azamara Pursuit. Together, these ships formed the core of a small-ship fleet aimed at a more upscale and destination-intensive segment of the cruise market.
